Tedisco praises the recent signing of law to increase criminal penalties against animal fighting

ALBANY ? Assemblyman Jim Tedisco (R-Schenectady-Saratoga) came out in full support of the recent signing of a bill he co-sponsored to increase criminal penalties for animal fighting in New York State.

June 1 marked New York?s first ever State Animal Advocacy Day, which drew hundreds of animal advocates to Albany to lobby for stricter laws against those accused of animal cruelty and abuse.

That day, Tedisco made bill A.4407, which increases penalties for spectators at animal fighting events to a class-B misdemeanor punishable by up to three months in jail and a $500 fine for the first offense and up to a year in jail with a $1,000 fine for a second offense, a priority on his agenda.

On August 2, Tedisco wrote to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo urging him to sign the bill into State law after news reports suggested evidence of an organized criminal infrastructure in the animal fighting industry.

Gov. Cuomo responded positively to Tedisco?s support of the bill, which Cuomo signed into law earlier this week.
