Texas A&M, Mizzou to pay $24.8M to leave Big 12

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? Texas A&M and Missouri have agreed to pay $12.4 million each to leave the Big 12 and join the Southeastern Conference in July.

Big 12 Interim Commissioner Chuck Neinas said Tuesday in a statement that the agreements were reached "though a collegial, respectful process among the Conference, its institutions," and the departing schools.

Texas A&M will receive unspecified benefits from the Big 12's new television contract with Fox Sports and "certain other concessions."

"We appreciate the Big 12 working with us on a quick and amicable settlement," said Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin, who indicated that the bottom-line financial impact of the withdrawal settlement for the university will be $9.31 million.

Missouri waived any claims to revenue from the TV deal, which takes effect in July, and agreed to pay the Big 12 another $500,000 to cover officiating expenses for 2011-12.

"We are pleased to have these issues resolved and we wish the Big 12 and its continuing member institutions the best in the future," University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton said.

The Big 12 is adding TCU and West Virginia next season to replace Texas A&M and Missouri. The Mountaineers and the Big East settled competing lawsuits earlier this month, with the Big East receiving $20 million from the school and the Big 12 for West Virginia to join next football season.

Duracell Powermat WiCC could bring wireless charging to any smartphone, we go hands-on (video)

Powermat may have a bright future, but the company's products to date have been expensive, slightly clunky and a generally imperfect solution for bringing wireless power to mobile devices. That could all change with WiCC. The Wireless Charging Card (WiCC) is an IEEE Power Matters Alliance (PMA) standard, with the potential to integrate Duracell Powermat technology within every mobile gadget. The incredibly thin device resembles those wafer-like SmartMedia cards once used in early digital cameras, with a similar form factor, but significantly more practicality. Each WiCC includes all the PowerMat circuitry found in the company's charging cases, while also doubling as an NFC antenna. The card's success is of course contingent on cooperation from device manufacturers, who will need to add a slim connector above the battery leads, including two for power, two for NFC and two for data -- an app will monitor charging. Powermat reps say that such a connector would cost pennies to implement, however, making it a potentially easy sell.

Powermat President Daniel Schreiber sees this as a major breakthrough for the smartphone industry, saying "we're going to do for wireless power what the memory card did for storage in mobile phones." We had a chance to take a look at a mock-up of the wireless card at MWC, which was resting just above the battery in a Samsung Galaxy S II. Because the phone's battery is slightly recessed, both the card and battery fit below the device's original backplate -- the WiCC lies flush with the phone's camera lens. Overall, we think there's some serious potential here, assuming device manufacturers are game to come on board. Still, don't expect to see these hitting stores anytime this year -- the company expects its other products to come to market long before the Wireless Charging Card. So for now, jump past the break to take a closer look, but don't make any plans to toss that power adapter just yet.

On Campus: Lady Pirates prevail in MEAC showdown at Florida A&M

His Hampton Lady Pirates prevailed in a battle of first-place Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams on Saturday, surviving a last-second 3-point try to outlast Florida A&M 46-43 in Tallahassee, Fla.

But David Six wasn?t quite ready to talk about back-to-back regular-season league titles and top seeds in conference tournaments just yet.

?We?re going to wait and see,? said Six, whose team won the regular-season MEAC crown last year before winning its second consecutive MEAC tournament title. ?We have games Monday and Thursday. We?ll talk then. We don?t want to get ahead of ourselves.?

Spoken like a coach, and one who is still understandably cautious after losing his senior guard and her 10 points per game to a season-ending injury. Still, with games against Bethune-Cookman and (9-16, 6-7 MEAC) and North Carolina Central (1-12, 3-23) remaining, it?s difficult to imagine that Hampton, now 21-4 and 13-1, isn?t two wins away from another championship.

On Saturday, junior forward Keiara Avant led the way, scoring 18 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in a defensive struggle. The Lady Pirates shot just 28.6 percent (16-of-56) but held the Lady Rattlers to just 23.8 (15-of-63).

Antonia Bennett, leading the MEAC with 18.5 points per game, was held to eight on 3-of-15 shooting.

FAMU (19-7, 12-2 MEAC) led by as many as eight midway through the second half, but 8-0 HU run tied the game for the 10th time with 7:40 to play. Two more ties followed before Avant's free throw gave the Lady Pirates the lead for good with 3:11 to play. Avant's jumper made it 46-43 with 46 seconds left, and Tameka McKelton's 3-point try at the buzzer fell short.

?We did a great job defensively,? Six said. ?That?s really what it boils down to. This is a tough place to play. It was packed in here.

? ? We really did a good job of fighting.?

HU?s defensive effort and Avant?s performance encouraged Six, whose team will be likely be without Melanie Warner?s 10.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 42 percent shooting from 3-point range for the rest of the season after Warner broke her finger catching a ball in last Sunday?s practice.

?The further we go, the more practices we get without her, the better,? Six said.

After Monday?s game at Bethune-Cookman and at N.C. Central on March 1, the Lady Pirates will head into the MEAC tournament, to be held March 5-10 in Winston-Salem, N.C., looking for their third straight title and resulting NCAA tournament appearance.

HU got its money?s worth in last year?s Big Dance, taking Kentucky to overtime before losing 66-62.

Hampton is eager to see what it can do if it earns a return trip. But, as Six says, first things first.

?Avant did a good job tonight, but we?ve got to get the other kids going, and we?ll take it from there,? he said.

Curiously enough, it turns out Dolphin's makers MoboTap had no idea their app was available via BlackBerry's App World. The discovery came after we were notified by developer Steve Troughton-Smith that Dolphin HD had been submitted to App World by white label store Handster (owned by Opera). We reached out to MoboTap who confirmed they didn't authorize any submission by Handster, with a spokesperson telling us "We do not condone Handster submitting our Dolphin Browser app to BlackBerry's App World for us and are currently working to take it down and assure Handster will not submit our app for us again. We will assess developing for BlackBerry when the time is right." Dolphin HD may be a free app, but the question remains: why is Handster submitting it without permission? Epson EX7210 Multimedia Projector

The Epson EX7210 Multimedia Projector ($649 direct) is a portable, easy to set up and use business projector with a good feature set and range of ports. Its data image quality isn?t perfect, but should be fine for typical business presentations made to small groups.

The EX7210?s light source, based on the 3LCD technology developed by Epson, is rated at 2,800 lumens. The projector provides WXGA (1,280 by 800 pixel) native resolution, at a 16:10 aspect ratio. It has a similar feature set to the Editors? Choice NEC NP-M260W ($850 street, 4 stars), a WXGA projector rated at 2,600 lumens. In addition to the zoom and focus wheels, the EX7210 also has a slider behind the lens to manually provide horizontal keystone correction.

The black EX7210 measures 3.1 by 11.6 by 9.0 inches (HWD), including feet, and weighs 5.1 pounds. It?s easily transportable in its included soft carrying case.

The EX7210?s ports include VGA-in; HDMI-in; 3 RCA plugs for composite video and audio; S-video; a type B USB port for connecting with a PC (USB Plug ?n Play provides easy connectivity with both Macs and Windows PCs); and a type A port that fits a USB thumb drive.

Still and Video Image Testing

From a distance of about 9 feet away, the EX7210 filled our test screen with an image about 65 inches on a diagonal. The image was bright in a darkened room, and held its own even with a considerable amount of ambient light. The projector should be fine for smallish conference rooms.

In my testing using the DisplayMate suite, the EX7210?s data image quality was adequate for business presentations in which exacting color isn?t required. Tinting was an issue; in many projectors, grays can look slightly greenish; in some test images with this model, the green tint was unusually pronounced. In our text testing, white-on-black text appeared slightly fuzzy, though readable, at the two smallest sizes, with traces of red and green tinted at the two smallest sizes, while the smallest size of black-on-white text was a bit fuzzy and showed a hint of red.

The EX7210?s video quality is good enough for showing short or mid-length clips, though I?d draw the line at movies. There was some loss of detail in bright areas in our test clips, and traces of posterization?abrupt changes in color where they should be gradual. In some action scenes, and scenes where the camera was quickly panning, I saw motion artifacts in the form of a very mild hatching, though I doubt that many viewers likely to be distracted by it.

Other Issues

The projector?s single 2-watt built-in speaker provides decent sound quality and volume, loud enough to be heard in a smaller conference room.

The Epson EX7210 Multimedia Projector is a capable WXGA projector, with a good range of connectivity ports (including HDMI-in and a port for a USB thumb drive that lets you present computer-free) and some nice features like USB Plug ?n Play and a slider for horizontal keystone correction.? Though data image quality is okay for most business presentations, the projector would not be ideal for situations in which exacting color and/or tack-sharp small text is needed.

The slightly heavier (though still portable) NEC NP-M260W ($850 street, 4 stars) and the featherweight Epson PowerLite 1775W, both Editors? Choice projectors, offer better data image quality, while the MP-M260W is bristling with connectivity choices. But you pay more for those models, and the EX7210 has some likeable features of its own.
