Google Revamping Search to Filter Out 'Spam' Sites

Google, hoping to win back some of the goodwill it has lost over the past year, is making it harder for spam sites to?game? the search engine, giving legitimate online businesses a better shot at reaching consumers.

Google?s [GOOG??642.59?? -3.46??(-0.54%)?? ] Matt Cutts surprised attendees at a panel during this month?s South by Southwest conference by unveiling an update to the company?s search algorithms ? which could impact the search results users see.

?

Google Search

?We don?t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks,? he said. ?We are trying to level the playing field a bit.?

That phrase ? ?level the playing field? ? is one that could be music to the ears of small and medium sized Internet-based businesses, who have complained for years that an overemphasis on search engine optimization has made Google?s results less relevant ? and has cost them money. And it could be particularly beneficial for content sites.

?What Google is trying to do is get rid of spam sites,? says Matt Sullivan, eBusiness marketing manager at Direct Capital. ?People have been creating crappy content with hundred and hundreds of keywords. ? [Now,] if small and medium sized businesses put some thought and value into their website, filling it with content that site visitors will appreciate, then they?ll rank highly.?

Cutts has been called the ?Greenspan of Google? since offhand comments from him are dissected and scrutinized by the SEO world. And his SXSW announcement put that profession on alert.

?We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it,? he said.

The search changes, while notable, are likely not a direct reaction to the company?s PR problems. While Google would not comment further on Cutts? comments, it did note that changes of this sort are typically in the works for a long time before they?re made public.

Although the changes are aimed at improving results for the end user, some IT departments and SEO experts are still grumbling. That?s part of the normal cat and mouse game that?s typically played between Google and those fields.

The site regularly tweaks its search protocols to battle companies who are optimized to rank high on Google, but have little to no useful content. (Those sites are typically loaded with ads and can be immensely profitable for their owners.) In 2010, for example, Google made more than 500 changes to its search parameters ? and another 520 in 2011. At any given time, the company says, Google runs over 200 live search experiments.

?10 years ago, my job was to trick engines into delivering traffic,? said John H. Denny, vice president of marketing for Advance Digital and a 20-year digital media veteran, in a Twitter post. ?Now it?s to trick clients into developing content that users want.?

The changes are likely to be welcomed by most businesses and content companies, since search is still a critical component of discoverability for customers. But as the Internet has evolved over the past six years, Google has lost its lead as the most important online tool for companies.

The rise of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter has negatively impacted search engines among people looking to make a purchase. Rather than searching blindly for, say, a vacuum, many people start by asking their friends. And many businesses have found their products go viral without spending a lot of time optimizing their sites for search engines.

?You can?t go into the online game saying ?I don?t need Google?,? says Sullivan. ?Outside of Facebook, it?s the most visited website. It?s how people are going to find you. But with the way social media has grown so fast in the past five or six years, that?s how businesses will be found in the future.?

Jim Harbaugh Shows Off HUGE Muscles At NCAA Tournament [PHOTO]

Jim Harbaugh likes the NCAA Tournament. Jim Harbaugh likes Indiana basketball. Tonight, Jim Harbaugh is at the NCAA Tournament, cheering on the Indiana Hoosiers along with his brother, John Harbaugh, as they take on the top-seeded Kentucky Wildcats.

While screaming his head off like a lunatic along with plenty of other IU fans, the CBS cameras scanned past the crowd and caught an interesting glimpse of the 49ers head coach.

Looks like someone has been hitting the gym this offseason!

Unfortunately, it looks like this photo is not all it appears to be. A small girl, clearly not impressed with the level of play, is turned right behind Harbaugh and has her left arm bent, creating an illusion with the head coach.

Good times during March Madness.

Now if only Jim Schwartz was a Kentucky fan...

For more on the NCAA Tournament, be sure to check out the SB Nation StoryStream. 49ers fans should check out Niners Nation to talk Harbaugh, the draft and much, much more.

Alonso wins rainy, crazy Malaysian GP

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso won the rain-interrupted Malaysian Grand Prix in thrilling style on Sunday to claim his first victory in eight months and throw the early title race wide open.

Alonso survived a lengthy rain suspension, a rash of spins and mishaps and a strong challenge from Sauber's Sergio Perez to finish the year's second race ahead of the Mexican driver, with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton third.

Spain's Alonso, a two-time world champion, was nobody's pre-race favourite in the clunky F2012, but he emerged from the chaos caused by torrential rains at the head of the pack and doggedly clung on for victory.

"It's an unbelievable result and a great job from the team," Alonso said. "We maximised the potential we had in our hands. It's a tough time for us at the moment but we will remember this Sunday."

Perez pushed hard for his first win and looked set to steal victory from Alonso until he dramatically overshot a turn on lap 50.

But he still managed seal his maiden trip to the podium -- and Sauber's best result since they reverted to the ownership of their founder, Peter Sauber, in 2009.

"I wanted the win and I thought it was possible," smiled the Mexican, who is rumoured to be in Ferrari's sights to replace the struggling Felipe Massa. "It never happened but I'm very happy and proud with this second place."

Red Bull's Mark Webber was fourth with former world champion Kimi Raikkonen fifth for Lotus. German great Michael Schumacher, who started third on the grid, span early in the race and finished 10th.

But there were no points for McLaren's Jenson Button, who won last week's season-opener in Australia, after he collided with India's Narain Karthikeyan and dropped to the back of the pack, finally coming in 14th.

Red Bull's reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel also endured a torrid day as a spectacular rear tyre blow-out left him in 11th.

After days of mostly dry weather, black clouds rolled over Sepang and the rain fell, right on cue, as the Malaysian anthem was played.

Pole-sitter Hamilton, who was passed by Button at the front of the grid in Melbourne last week, survived a furious challenge from his team-mate at the start and he emerged from the first corner with his lead intact.

But as the cars kicked up plumes of spray, it was only a matter of time before they started spinning and the first casualty was wet-weather maestro Schumacher, who dropped down the field.

The rain immediately turned torrential and Ferrari's Massa was the first in for wet-weather tyres, followed immediately by the other drivers in a chaotic few minutes in the pit lane.

Lotus's young Frenchman Romain Grosjean span into the gravel and out of the race, Mercedes' Nico Rosberg went off-course and Button radioed that the last sector was "like a lake" before the safety car came out on lap seven.

And as the rain came down in buckets, the race was suspended shortly afterwards, evoking memories of Button's storm-shortened victory in 2009.

But less than an hour later they were back out and once the safety car withdrew for lap 14, it was the signal for some frenzied action as drivers dived into the pits for intermediate tyres on the drying track.

Button smashed up his front wing in the collision with HRT's Karthikeyan and needed his third pit stop, pushing him way down to 21st. On lap 18 Alonso led followed by Perez, Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel and Raikkonen.

Vettel and Raikkonen both nipped past Rosberg on laps 23 and 24 to leave the German world champion behind Hamilton in third spot.

Alonso was driving his unloved Ferrari to the limit, but his big lead was whittled down to just a couple of seconds by Perez before both joined the rush to pit for slick tyres around lap 40.

When they resumed Alonso was seven seconds in front but Perez was soon back on the Spaniard's tail, setting up a gripping dogfight in the closing laps -- distracted only by a nasty puncture for Vettel, who slipped back.

But when Perez went off-course with six laps to go, Alonso was able to claim his first win since the British Grand Prix last July -- and conclude a remarkable weekend for the Ferrari camp.

The first five drivers are separated by just 13 points in the overall standings as the 20-stop season heads to the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on April 15.

Pope pledges to fight "evil" of drugs in Mexico

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Benedict set out for Mexico on Friday promising to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in a country that has been wracked by a surge in gang violence over the past five years.

The pope, who starts his three-day visit in the central city of Leon, gave a forceful response when asked on board his plane about drug trafficking in Mexico, which has unleashed violence claiming some 50,000 lives since 2007.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters. "It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs."

The relentless bloodletting was in the mind of many of those waiting to see Benedict in Leon, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars between drug cartels and clashes with security forces.

"The Church has to address the violence, give us a message that there can be change. We are all fed up, our society has been hurt," said Ruben Santibanez, a local doctor.

The pope's strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. He will meet the pope.

The government's inability to stem the violence has eroded support for Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN) - a group with strong Catholic roots that faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.

In Leon, hundreds of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps - many of them young people let out of school for the day - lined the streets from early Friday morning to secure prime spots to see the pope pass, cheering at passing cars.

Several followers were hanging a large banner that read "Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns."

Others readied campsites to await a massive outdoor mass on Sunday where hundreds of thousands of people are expected.

A survey by polling firm Gabinete de Comunicacion Estrategica (GCE) published in newspaper Milenio on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.

Benedict, who will also travel to Cuba, hopes to rally the faithful in the world's second most populous Catholic nation as more Mexicans are lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

But the German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region in his 27-year papacy.

ABUSE SCANDALS

Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics.

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

"The enthusiasm (about the pope's visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow," Barranco said in an interview.

Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet with Mexican victims.

The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy.

Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.
