Protect your home and family during cold weather

COLUMBUS,Ga. ?

Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores says taking a few steps to keep your home free of fire hazards is time well spent during these winter days.

A lot of the problems we run into is cleanliness?People have kept things over years and years, said Shores. Shores advises residents to clean up the clutter.

When it comes to heating devices like space heaters?leave plenty of lsquo;space.

Make sure they have about 3 feet around the device and with the newer units make sure they have a tip switch inside theyll shut down if it tips over, said Shores.

Shores also says sit down with your family and talk about an escape plan.

Make sure there are two exits out of the home?.and make sure your windows arent painted shut. When theres an emergency, thats not the time to find out, said Shores

Local plumber Daniel Goforth says let your faucet drip to prevent pipes from freezing.

Open your cabinets, make sure you have insulation on your pipes, try to make sure there are no pipes that can get any air on them, said Goforth.

For residents who cant afford a smoke detector, Shores says thats no excuse. You can call

(706) 653-3500 and the department will deliver one to your home for free.
