Steve Prefontaine Biography

Steve Prefontaine was born, 25 January 1951 in the small town of Coos Bay, Oregon. His father Raymond was a carpenter and his mother Elfriede was a seamstress from Germany. Steve Prefontaine was a typical high school sports and wanted to play football and traditional. Prefontaine was too small for the sport and decided to run.

Steve Prefontaine began his racing career at Marshfield High School and was looking for one of the most popular driverUnited States of America. He was undefeated in cross country and track his junior and senior year. Pre was very versatile and can run a 1:54 800 meters to 5000 meters race 13:52. His last year at Marshfield High School has set the American record company in two miles long.

Coach Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon provided for talent and took him seriously. The fall of 1969 was Steve Prefontaine on campus and ran cross country this fall. When he finished hisCareer at Oregon University he won seven NCAA national titles: three in cross country, 1970, 1971 and 1973 and four in the three-mile track, '70, '72, '71 and '73. Steve Prefontaine was the first athlete to win four consecutive event titles in the same NCAA title. He also has eight collegiate records including the mile 3:06 mile race, which were not broken.

Steve Prefontaine continued with the implementation of career and made the 1972 Olympic Team5000 meters long. He ran a gutsy race and led most of the last mile, but at the end of the fourth, one place outside the medals. Pre was an icon in Oregon and people would seat distribution in the Hayward Field to watch Steve run. He has never lost a race yet in Hayward field and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. His fans would cheer him on site just for him. Steve Prefontaine was also involved with his community. He offered it to Roosevelt Junior High School and started a running club at Oregon State Prison.
