iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Which one should you get?

iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Which one should you get?

Apple has released the taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter iPhone 5 -- and we've got your definitive iPhone 5 review right here -- and now Samsung is bringing their next-generation giant, the Galaxy Note 2 to market.

As much as Samsung has been labeled a "copyist" over the course of the last couple years, the Galaxy Note series has always been a big exception, literally. Due to its size, some have labeled it a "phablet", half phone, half tablet. While it's both of those things, it's also neither. It's really a Wacom-style digitizer put into highly mobile form. And as anyone who's ever used a Wacom knows, it resembles a stylus in shape only.

So what happens when you put Apple's precision up against Samsung's power? The iPhone 5's elegance against the Galaxy Note 2's enormity? Let's take a look.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Hardware and software

Android Central is working on a full review now, and we'll add a link to it here as soon as it's live. In the meantime, here are James Richardson's first impressions and hands-on with the Galaxy Note 2.

Powered by a quad-core 1.6 GHz Exynos 4 processor, the Galaxy Note 2 has some substantial horsepower behind it, along with a plentiful 2GB of on-board RAM. Combined with a whopping 3100mAh battery, we're expecting some serious longevity from this device. The Note 2 runs Jelly Bean out of the box, making Samsung's phone/tablet hybrid the first to ship with Android 4.1. And it now sports a 5.55-inch (non-PenTile) HD SuperAMOLED 1280x720 display, protected by Gorilla Glass 2. The extra size of the phone does add few of grams to its weight -- at 180 grams it isn't light, but it's not terribly heavy considering its monstrous size.

There are also numerous software enhancements, including the ability to command an on-screen cursor by hovering the stylus over the screen. This can be used to peek into gallery folders, calendar events expandable areas. And the usual selection of Samsung drawing and note-taking apps is included too, as are all of the software features of the Galaxy S3.

Apple iPhone 5: Hardware and software

The iPhone 5 has a newly re-designed unibody aluminum chassis to allow for a bigger 4-inch screen in a phone that's 12% smaller by volume. It's taller but not wider, thinner and also lighter. That 4-inch screen also uses in-cell technology to combine the touch sensor right into the LCD. At 1136x640 and 326ppi, it's still backlit LED, and still IPS, and technically the best, most advanced panel on the planet for now. Apple also rolled their own, custom Apple A6 processor this time, based on ARM v7s, for amazing performance and excellent power management. There's still no NFC, but there is CDMA, HSPA, and international LTE.

iOS 6 comes loaded on the iPhone 5, and includes a new, controversial Maps app, some great extensions to Siri, deep Facebook integration, Passbook, and enhancements to FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Photo Stream, and Accessibility. And because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, there's no integration, no added interface layers, and a seamless experience overall.

Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: The bottom line

While the story of the Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 might remain one of precision vs. power, when it comes to the iPhone 5 vs. the Galaxy Note 2, the elegance vs. enormity line requires deeper inspection. A 5.5-inch phone display is something that fits the needs of a very specific niche -- namely those that want more than a traditional phone -- those who essentially want a mobile notepad.

For this reason, for most people, the iPhone remains the default choice, and the perfect blend of killer design and absolute ease of use. If you don't like something about the iPhone, there are also a bunch of great alternatives to consider, including the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, or the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920.

The Galaxy Note 2, due to its size and its Wacom technology, is a very, very specific one, and you'll likely know it you need it.

W3C Accepts Microsoft?s Multiple Pointer Types Submission

Today the W3C has accepted and published Microsoft?s submission of a new? way for Web sites and app developers to support multiple pointing devices, such as mouse, pen and multi-touch.

Microsoft: Today, most web content is used with and/or designed for mouse input. Those that handle input in a custom manner typically code to DOM Level 3 Mouse Events. Newer computing devices today, however, incorporate other forms of input, like touchscreens or pen input. Event types have been proposed for handling each of these forms of input individually. However, that approach requires a step function in opportunity cost to authors when adding support for a new input type. This often creates a compatibility problem when content is written with only one device type in mind. Additionally, for compatibility with existing mouse-based content, most user agents fire Mouse Events for all input types. This makes it ambiguous whether a Mouse Event represents an actual mouse device or is being produced from another input type for compatibility, which makes it hard to code to both device types simultaneously.

W3C: The proposed event model described in this specification defines mechanisms for managing multiple concurrent pointer instances simultaneously from one or more input devices, for detecting which pointer event is the primary input, for identifying which device type produced each pointer, for allowing chorded button inputs to detect all of the buttons which are active during the dispatch of the event, and for allowing pointer events to be targeted at specific elements. This event model includes consideration for devices that do and do not allow for ?hover? interaction, a major concern for accessibility.

(AP) ? The NHL and the players' association seemingly had a good day on Friday as they returned to the negotiating table.

It just wasn't good enough to bring the sides all that much closer to the end of the lockout that threatens the start of the hockey regular season.

The league and the union got back to bargaining for the first time since players were locked out on Sept. 16, and the sides discussed secondary issues without broaching the big economic divide that really is the essence of the dispute.

"It was a good day," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Friday night after the second negotiating session of the day. "I wish we had spent today on what we consider to be the more meaningful issues, but it is what it is."

The sides were together for a total of about five hours ? including a private meeting between Commissioner Gary Bettman and union head Donald Fehr.

A handful of players also took part in the talks.

The groups agreed on issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious. They will get back together on Saturday morning, and plan to meet on Sunday, too, but the topics of discussion still don't seem to include the big dollar issues.

"I don't know if I would say significant, but we did seem to make some progress on a number of things. Hopefully we will continue," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said. "There is no plan right now to discuss core economic issues."

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made to the union in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

"We can't make them talk about what they don't want to talk about," Daly said. "In fairness, we do have to cover these issues if we're going to reach an agreement. What we're doing today is important, it's just not the most important things we can be doing.

"We've made at least two consecutive moves in significant dollars in their direction, and they haven't moved a single dollar in our direction since Aug. 4."

Former player Mathieu Schneider, now an NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, said Friday morning that there were agreements on more rigorous drug testing, expanding it to parts of the year during which testing is not currently done.

Neither side sees the use of performance-enhancing drugs as a problem in the NHL.

"We're in agreement that it's not an issue in our sport," Schneider said. "I think it's in the players' best interest as well as the sport to close off any possible time during the year where players could use."

Other topics on tap for Friday and through the weekend are various health and safety issues, time players spend at training facilities, and other non-economic topics.

"We like to say that nothing is agreed to until everything is agreed to, but we've certainly made some headway," Schneider said. "A lot of it was done previous to this morning. We're taking notes of where we stand. I would say that we have a lot of mutual ground that we have found agreement on."

It is not impossible that monetary issues will come up for discussion in this round of talks, they just aren't scheduled. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

"In general, when you're dealing with collective bargaining, when you start to have agreements on smaller issues, it can lead to bigger issues," Schneider said, "but it's still too early to say."

These are the first talks since the lockout was put in place on Sept. 16 and they came a day after the league canceled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL canceled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

"The calendar continues to tick along," Daly said. "My guess is as time goes on, regular-season games are at risk. I don't think it can be any more urgent than where we are now. We've had that level of urgency for a long time. In some respects you can meet all you want, but if there is no compromise or no movement or no new proposals I am not sure at the end of the day what you're meeting over.

"There is a very high degree of urgency certainly on our side. I can't speak for their side, but I am sure they would tell you there is a degree of urgency there, too."

Steve Fehr contended that the players' association is willing to discuss any issues at any time to try to make a deal soon.

"We can discuss the core issues whenever they want to do it," he said. "Bargaining is not ping pong. There are no rules on who has to serve.

"I don't want to use the adjective optimistic, but it was a productive discussion. We had a good session and hopefully it will continue and build momentum."

Zeckendorfs eye another home-run with 18 GPS - Real Estate Weekly

By Holly Dutton

A finished model unit is drawing curious buyers to 18 Gramercy Park where developers Will and Lie Zeckendorf are hoping to re-create the record-breaking success of their 15 Central Park West.

The unit is the first completed apartment in the 17-story building, formerly the Salvation Army?s Parkside Evangeline residence for young ladies. Located at the corner of Gramercy Park South and Irving Place, the building directly overlooks Manhattan?s only private park, for which only residents hold a key.

Originally built in 1927, it was a dormitory for young women to live in temporarily while they looked for jobs, recalled Arlene Harrison, president of Gramercy Park Block Association and a Trustee of Gramercy Park who has been monitoring the Zeckendorfs? progress in the tony neighborhood, whose residents include movie stars like Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman, actors Jim Parsons and Alex Baldwin, and more than a board table worth of high powered business moguls.

According to Harrison, the locals welcomed the Zeckendorfs to their tight-knit corner of Manhattan with open arms.

?The building is the tallest in the Gramercy Park Historic District, but it was not particularly notable architecturally,? said Harrison. ?The Zeckendorf Development team was the only one we wanted.?

The Zeckendorfs purchased the building for $60 million. Although the deal went to contract in 2007, it took two years to close as first some of the Parkside ladies went to court to fight the sale and then Lehman went bust and soured the wealthy?s taste for extravagant spending.

Construction began in 2010 and Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the Yale School of Architecture and the man responsbile for crafting 15 CPW, was tapped once again, this time to transform the 200-room single-occupancy building into just 16 luxury family apartments.

?This is the very first project following the global and unprecedented success achieved at 15 Central Park West,? said Zeckendrof Development in an email to Brokers Weekly. ?18 Gramercy Park is a continuum of design excellence on a smaller scale, but is equally important.?

On CPW, the company sold $2 billion worth of apartments, making it the most expensive apartment building to ever open in Manhattan.

All going well, they?ll collect around $200 million on the ?smaller scale? 18 GPS.

Although only three apartments have officially been listed, the developer said prices range from $9.25 million for a ground floor two-bedroom apartment with a home office, three baths and a powder room, to $42 million for a 6,329 s/f two-story penthouse.

Floor plans show the duplex penthouse has five bedrooms, five baths and two powder rooms; a salon, library, gallery and 18 x 12 ft. foyer as well as staff quarters and a laundry room. The 1,889 s/f of outside space includes a giant terrace off the salon that overlooks the park and a plethora of other terraces, each with its own little touch of luxury, such as an infinity pool or a whirlpool.

Full-floor homes are listed between $14 and $18 million and amenities in the building include 24-hour doorman, concierge, spa, fitness center, and a pet-grooming room.?Residents will also get the option of purchasing a coveted key to Gramercy Park.???
Sales at 18 Gramercy Park South began on Sept. 4 and ?several residences are spoken for? said the developer, adding, ?Zeckendorf Development is consistently focused on attention to detail and materials, as well as on the relationship of space and light, which allows 18 Gramercy Park to offer unique living spaces.

?18 Gramercy Park is a newly-designed, modern classic that evokes the luxury and grandeur of some of New York?s finest cooperative landmarks in a historic downtown setting.?

One of the main marketing strategies that can help online retailers build a successful Internet business is search engine optimization (SEO), the process of tailoring your website to the algorithms that search engines use to rank websites based on ?signals? that the site emits.

However, search engine algorithms continue to change with time as the Web evolves (Panda Updates, anyone?), so online retailers need to evolve with the engines. We must make sure we keep up-to-date with best practices to claim the best possible rankings for relevant keywords.
cimg1190 Famous Quotes
If you want your website to rank well in 2012, here are 6 components of SEO that online retailers should know about when optimizing their e-commerce website to rank well in top search engines:

Keywords. Keyword research is the first step to a successful SEO strategy. Those successful with SEO understand what people are searching for when discovering their business in a search engine. These are the keywords they use to drive targeted traffic to their products. Start brainstorming potential keywords, and see how the competition looks by using Google AdWords Keyword Tool. If you notice that some keywords are too competitive in your niche, go with long-tail keywords (between two and five words) which will be easier for you to rank. The longer the keyword, the less competition you will have for that phrase in the engines.

Meta tags. Meta tags still play a vital role in SEO. If you type any keyword into a search engine, you?ll see how that keyword is reflected in the title for that page. Google looks at your page title as a signal of relevance for that keyword. The same holds true for the description of that page. (Don?t worry about the keyword title tag ? Google has publicly said that it doesn?t pay attention to that tag, since it has been abused by webmasters and all those trying to rank for certain keywords.)
Content. It?s true, content is king. Search engines have stated that creating quality content is the best way to not only rank for keywords, but also create positive user experiences. It will also go a long way with making sure you?re educating your consumer, and being an authority in your niche will leads to boosts in sales.
Backlinks. If content is king, then backlinks are queen. Remember, it?s not about which site has the most links, but who has the most quality links pointing back to their website. Build backlinks by submitting monthly or bi-monthly press releases on any exciting company, and contacting popular blogs in your niche to see how you can work together to get a backlink from their website. Create the best possible product site you can, so people talking about the products you sell will link back. Try creating graphics or newsworthy content that will influence bloggers and news websites to link that content.
Social media. The algorithms have truly changed since social media first emerged. Many content websites are community-oriented ? Digg began allowing users to vote which stories make the front page, and YouTube factors views and user ratings into their front page rankings. Therefore, e-commerce stores must establish a strong social media presence on sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc. These social media sites send search engines signals of influence and authority.
Product images. If you think images don?t play a role, think again. When many consumers search for products in the search engines, not only are they looking at the ?Web? results, but they?re also looking at the ?images? results. If you have quality images of that product on your site ? and the files? names contain relevant keywords ? these images will rank well in search engines. This avenue will drive a lot of traffic to your site, as potential customers will click on that image to find your store.

In addition to optimizing these six areas of your site, analyze your competitors and see what they are doing in terms of on-page optimization, off-page optimization (competitive link analysis) and social media. While you may be doing a lot of the same things they are, it?s incredibly important to think outside the box to get a leg up over the competition.

Why Your Nonprofit Needs a Communications Plan - Community ...

We?ve designed our workshops this year?to help you get a leg up on your 2013 communications strategy.

We want to help you avoid communications crises like last year?s?inadvertent re-branding of the Susan G. Komen Foundation?- a case that stands out in the minds of many nonprofit communicators.

Remember last February when the?leading nonprofit jumped into a highly controversial area of public debate?without a communications strategy??When their audience responded to their decision to revoke funding to Planned Parenthood, the organization stayed silent. As a result, others took over the public dialogue. In 24 hours, comments across social networks broke down the brand that the Komen Foundation spent years building.

That is why it is so important for nonprofits to develop a communications plan!?

Join communications expert Thom Clark on Thursday, October 4th for a Developing A Communications Plan Workshop that will help you understand how to steer and stay in control of your organization?s reputation.

This workshop is aimed at nonprofit communicators who are new to communications and to seasoned professionals that want to refresh their skills.

  • Learn how to establish goals and create messages that moves your audience to action.
  • Create a communications plan and learn how to implement it.
  • Get tips on how to incorporate social media tools into traditional media outreach.
  • Gain new communications skills that bring added value to your job.

Remember, communicating effectively with media, funders and your audience starts with a solid communications plan.
Take the first step toward successful communications!?REGISTER TODAY!

Scientists shed light on riddle of sun's explosive events

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Four decades of active research and debate by the solar physics community have failed to bring consensus on what drives the sun's powerful coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that can have profound "space weather" effects on Earth-based power grids and satellites in near-Earth geospace.

In a paper just published in Nature Physics, an international team of space scientists, including a researcher from the University of New Hampshire's Space Science Center (SSC), explains the mysterious physical mechanisms underlying the origin of CMEs. Their findings, based on state-of-the-art computer simulations, show the intricate connection between motions in the sun's interior and these eruptions and could lead to better forecasting of hazardous space weather conditions.

CMEs are clouds of magnetic fields and plasma ?- a hot gas composed of charged particles. The fastest and most powerful of these events can explode from the sun at speeds of more than a million miles per hour and release more energy than the current worldwide stockpile of nuclear weapons.

"By studying CMEs we learn not only about the drivers of space weather but also about the structure of the atmosphere of the sun and other sun-like stars," says lead author Ilia Roussev of the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Geomagnetic storms caused by CMEs can disrupt power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and telecommunication networks, pose a threat to astronauts in outer space, lead to rerouting of flights over the polar regions, and cause spectacular auroras. The storms occur when a solar eruption hits Earth's protective magnetic bubble, or magnetosphere.

The Nature Physics paper provides an explanation of the origin of fast ejections of magnetized plasma from the sun's atmosphere and associated X-ray emissions. It thus demonstrates a fundamental connection between the magnetic processes inside the sun's interior and the formation of CMEs.

"Through this type of computer modeling we are able to understand how invisible bundles of magnetic field rise from under the surface of the sun into interplanetary space and propagate towards Earth with potentially damaging results," says SSC researcher No? Lugaz of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. He adds, "These fundamental phenomena cannot be observed even with the most advanced instruments on board NASA satellites but they can be revealed by numerical simulations."

A long-standing goal of the solar physics community has been the forecasting of solar eruptions and predictions of their impact on Earth. In the paper, the authors note, "the model described here enables us not only to capture the magnetic evolution of the CME, but also to calculate the increased X-ray flux directly, which is a significant advantage over the existing models."

The work was supported by a CAS grant and two National Science Foundation grants in the U.S. -- one at the University of Hawaii and another at UNH. In addition to Roussev and Lugaz, the international team includes Klaus Galsgaard from the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, Cooper Downs from Predictive Science, Inc. in California, Igor Sokolov from the University of Michigan, Jun Lin from the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, and Elena Moise from the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy of Science.

News: Soldier's letter spurs IED hearing

Sunday, September 23, 2012, 11:34 PM - News Stories Soldier's letter spurs IED hearing.? The letter from Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton talked about how the men he commanded were forced to walk through a "mine field'' of improvised explosive devices every day for no apparent reason.? In the June letter he emailed to U.S. Rep. C.W. "Bill'' Young, Sitton wrote that he tried to bring his concerns to his chain of command but was told to "stop complaining." He was reaching out to the Florida Republican, he wrote, as a last resort to help his men.? Sitton, 26, of Largo, and another soldier were killed on Aug. 2 by an IED in the same Afghanistan field that Sitton talked about in his letter...

Facebook posts worry police in Pa. hostage-taking. Pittsburgh police said they had serious concerns when an armed man took a business owner hostage in a downtown high-rise office building _ and not just because he had a knife.? The suspect, 22-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton, made Facebook posts during the five-hour ordeal Friday, authorities said, and they feared that responses from friends, family and others might goad him into violence.? In the end, police say, Thaxton surrendered peacefully and released businessman Charles Breitsman.? Now police believe that Thaxton might have chosen Breitsman because he spotted a smartphone and computer in his office and saw a high-profile opportunity to express himself on the social networking site, Chief Nathan Harper said...

Inside the VA's Office of Online Communications

Saturday, September 22, 2012, 08:21 PM

Inside look at the VA's Office of Online Communications

DoD Live has a video that takes a look at the VA's Office of Online Communications.

The employees in the video discuss the VA's outreach mission and how they use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr, to help accomplish the mission.? The VA also runs the blog VAntage Point to connect with veterans.

If you watch the video you may recognize a friendly face from the milblogger community: Alex Horton of Army of Dude who is a VA New Media Specialist.?

The video is about four minutes long and takes you inside the offices at the Department of Veterans Affairs which I've never been inside, but from what I can see they're real nice.? If you look at the screenshot above, they almost look a little like the ESPN offices you often see in those funny ?This is SportsCenter? commercials.

The video is well done, but I'm gonna be honest, to really grab the viewer's attention,?I was hoping they would have started off with something like a "This is VeteransAffairs" commercial spot (like those ESPN commercials).

I can see it now ? a smiling VA employee sitting at their desk, reading?aloud suggestions from a "VA Suggestion Box" that say things like, "Reliable claim processing."? Then have three other employees standing over that employee, all?laughing out loud.?

Maybe have one spitting up coffee...another in tears laughing.?

Also, maybe have one of the Army Mule Mascots in the background trying to use a copier machine?

Milblogs get some news coverage in Alabama

Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 09:37 AM - Milbloggers in the News, News Stories Military blogs were highlighted in a news article today that appeared online at al.com, an Alabama internet source for?news and information.

The article is titled ?World Wide Web Wednesday: Milblogs?.

Michael Tomberline for The Birmingham News writes:

KABUL, Afghanistan - "Yellowhammering Afghanistan" falls into the category of blogs known as military blogs, or "milblogs" for short.

Any blog that has a connection to the military or a deployment, either written from the soldier's perspective or the spouse's back at home or any other connection qualifies as a milblog. At any given time, there are between 3,000 and 4,000 blogs being written.

Some, like mine, only exists as long as the deployment does. Others have taken on a life of their own and continue long after the military member returns home.

You can find an exhaustive collection of the miblogs at the Milblogging web site. I've chosen a few of my favorites to share on this second World Wide Wednesday.

A long-time favorite of mine is "Blackfive." It always touches on interesting topics written from a soldier's perspective (and bluntness) and has the added benefit of multiple contributors to help keep it fresh. A close second favorite is "A Soldier's Perspective," for many of the same reasons.
Full story and more to read here.

Thanks to Tomberline.

Taliban tweet while soldiers' families mourn

Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 08:40 AM - Twitter, News Stories

Plenty of news sites and blogs are reporting that the Taliban have posted a photo of former Afghan army sergeant Hikmatullah on Twitter, accompanied by a tweet that reads:

"Hikmatullah, hero who shot dead 6 Australian invaders, wounded 4 on 30th August 2012."

Taliban tweet while soldiers’ families mourn

Hikmatullah killed three Australian soldiers last month by turning his gun on them.? It?s reported that the soldiers ?were relaxing at their base? when they were killed.

Stjepan Milosevic, 40, a lance corporal from 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment was killed.?

Also killed were Robert Hugh Frederick Poate, 23, a private from 6 RAR, and James Thomas Martin, 21, a sapper from the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER).

The message, which can be seen here, was posted online this past Sunday.

The tweet comes only a few short weeks after the attack, as their families and friends mourn their loss.

Like always, I'm still wondering how terrorist organizations are allowed to post this type of stuff on Twitter.? Twitter does have boundaries, but apparently the company does not believe tweets gloating over the death of NATO forces is in violation.

@ABalkhi, the Twitter account that posted the tweet, has been going at it for a long time, even getting into a war of words online with NATO.

The tweet on Sunday with the photo of Hikmatullah prompted several responses, including tweets from Howard Stern regular Joey Boots who goes by @JoeyBoots on Twitter.? The messages can be seen directly below the Taliban tweet.

In the latest news, following a spike of insider attacks, U.S. and coalition forces scaled back partnering and advising operations with the Afghan National Security Forces.

Military fam posts vid of toddler behind wheel

Monday, September 17, 2012, 04:26 AM - News Stories, Facebook

WCNC-TV is reporting that a North Carolina military family is under fire for cell phone video of their two-year-old behind the wheel of a moving car

WCNC-TV is reporting that a North Carolina military family is under fire for cell phone video of their two-year-old behind the wheel of a moving car.

Apparently, the two-year old asked to drive, so of course?the parents put him right behind the steering wheel with his Marine father.?

?They thought it would be cute.?

The mother then took video on her cell phone, which they later posted to Facebook.? A friend saw the video and called the local TV station, which led to the uproar.

Honestly though, I'm?convinced the?little guy?has driven before.?

I mean, hands at 10-and-2, checking his mirrors... not bad.

If cell phones and Facebook have taught us anything, it's that you don't take a video of you doing something stupid and post it online.?

Granted, just yesterday I let my six-year old use a chainsaw in the backyard.? But at least I had the smarts not to take a video and post it to YouTube.

Tell me I?m not the only one who thinks a six-year old chopping down a tree is not the cutest.

At this point, the family has had to endure some name-calling, but luckily for them, the police have not charged them with anything, even though putting a toddler behind the wheel violates child restraint laws.? Who knew?

They said they now realize it was a dangerous move.

The real amazing part is that the news stories focus on the fact that the family is a "military family", when it could've been anyone.? They could've said "North Carolina Family" or "Local Family" or whatever.? But no, it had to be a "Military Family".

More here at WCNC including the video.? I found another clip here on YouTube.

93-yr-old pilot encourages vets to tell story

Pilot Betty Walls Strohfus, flew military aircraft during WWII with the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs).

Pilot Betty Walls Strohfus, flew military aircraft during WWII with the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs).?

Although 25,000 women applied to join the WASP, only 1,074 of them passed the training and joined.

Apparently, all records of the WASP were classified and sealed for 35 years, so little was known about the history.

But that's changed over the years.

In 2010, the WASPs were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in the Capitol.? The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award in the United States.? The list of recipients includes Native American code talkers who served in WWI and WWII.? The code talkers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2000.

Strohfus has also helped tell the story of the World War II women pilots.

KAALtv is reporting that the 93-year-old Strohfus is focusing on veterans, encouraging them to share their stories- "to ensure the memories of war are never sealed again."

Learn more about the Women Airforce Service Pilots here on Wikipedia.

I also paid a visit to the Veterans History Project website and found Strohfus? profile which includes an audio interview.

Iraq War Vet Hugh Martin Wins Writing Award

Thursday, September 13, 2012, 05:11 PM - News Stories Congratulations are in order for Iraq War veteran Hugh Martin, winner of the Iowa Review's 2012 Jeff Sharlet Memorial Prize for Veterans.

The Jeff Sharlet Memorial Award for Veterans is a creative writing contest for U.S. military veterans and active duty personnel.

It?s hosted by The Iowa Review.

The contest is open to veterans and active duty personnel writing in any genre and about any subject matter.

According to The Iowa Review,

?Martin?s work was selected from 265 contest entries in all genres.? Judge Robert Olen Butler noted that he was ?keenly moved by the depth of feeling and high quality of writing by these veterans. Hugh Martin's poetry represents this body of work at its finest, evoking wartime's moment-to-moment experience with brilliantly observed clarity while illuminating its manifestation of our shared human condition with wisdom and compassion. The best of what I read was not, in its essence, the work of veterans; it was the work of artists."

PBS NewsHour published an online interview and also posted one of Martin?s poems, which you can read below:

Intravenous
--Jalula, Iraq

A rope of black smoke
above the city. Police sirens. The feet
of the crowd over pavement.
We don't know who she is: barely

a year alive, her blue leggings wet, stuck
to the skin with her own blood.
Doc Johnson holds her head
like an orange in his open hand. He kneels

beside the white Opel while Kenson aims
the mounted light from his M4
through the shattered window to her face,
the glass spread around her

like rock salt on the brown
seat cushions. Doc scissors her cotton sleeve,
pushes his thumb to her arm for a vein--nothing...
He finds one, eye to hairline, pulsing

with her screams; he wipes the skin
with antiseptic, and with one hand,
steadies her head as an Imam's voice
blankets the night in waves; cars filled

with wounded weave around us with the dust.
Doc lowers the needle to this girl's blue vein,
and it touches her skin like pricking
the Tigris on a smooth map of the earth.

Twitter feud between US Embassy & Brotherhood

Thursday, September 13, 2012, 04:30 PM - Twitter, News Stories Online spats are not unusual for the popular microblogging site Twitter.

In this corner: the U.S. Embassy?s Cairo Twitter page (@USEmbassyCairo) with over 26,000 followers.?

In the other corner: the official Muslim Brotherhood?s English Twitter feed (@Ikhwanweb) with over 42,000 followers.

The AP is reporting that a Twitter feud has broken out between the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, and the Muslim Brotherhood.

By the looks of it, the so-called spat was very brief.

So, what happened?

According to the AP:

"It started when Ikhwanweb, the Twitter page of the Muslim Brotherhood, retweeted a message in English from the group's deputy head, Khairat el-Shater.

"We r relieved none of (at)USEmbassyCairo staff were harmed & hope US-Eg relations will sustain turbulence of Tuesday's events."

"Thanks," the embassy replied. "By the way, have you checked out your own Arabic feeds? I hope you know we read those too."
You can read more about the story here.

By the way, I decided to add the number of followers to help understand who has more influence online, but in terms of ?Klout?, the US Embassy has the Brotherhood beat.

According to the website Klout.com, the US Embassy has a score of 72, while the Brotherhood has a 65.
