That is one of the hardest things to learn: sharing the snow means you will have to learn how to avoid other skiers and snowboarders.

Try a lesson from a trained professional. The ski resorts have droves of instructors just itching to send you down the slopes on your first snowboarding adventure. You could sign up for a class, but you may find your fellow students are all six years old. If you can, take a private lesson. They're not much more expensive, and you get an instructor all to yourself. The more time you get with an instructor, the more likely you are to have fun and learn some actual skills.

If you put yourself in the hands of an instructor, remember to listen and disregard any preconceived notions you have of the sport or how well you will do at it. The instructors have taught a lot of people this skill, so what they're telling you deserves your attention. Try to put everything they say into practice.

If following all the instructions to the letter doesn't send you down a few slopes without falling, ask for a refund or a re-do. The ski resort has a lot invested, so they want you to succeed at your lesson and come back again and again for the season. They will try their best to accommodate you if you put your request in a reasonable manner.

US cannot say how many had communications watched (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Like its predecessor, the Obama administration says it cannot count how many people in the U.S. have had their telephone calls and emails monitored by government agents in national security investigations under federal surveillance law.

The national intelligence office said in a letter this week to two Senate Democrats that it was "not reasonably possible to identify the number."

The senators, Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado, worry that the government may be monitoring communications of law-abiding citizens with inadequate justification.

"We're not asking these questions to embarrass the administration or make the intelligence community's job more difficult," Wyden said in a statement Thursday. "Congress needs to know if the laws it writes are being interpreted and implemented as intended before it is asked to extend them, and failing to assure the public that government agencies aren't violating the rights of law-abiding Americans erodes public confidence and makes it harder for intelligence agencies to do their jobs."

The letter from the office of James Clapper, director of national intelligence, was a response to the senators' requests for information about how the Obama administration is interpreting amendments in 2008 to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Wyden and Udall say they are concerned that the administration may be engaging in expansive interpretations of the 2008 law, which is scheduled to expire in late 2012.

The 2008 FISA amendments allow the government to obtain from a secret court broad, yearlong intercept orders that target foreign groups and people overseas, raising the prospect that phone calls and e-mails between those foreign targets and innocent Americans in this country will be swept in.

In saying it was unable to provide a number for those in the U.S. whose communications were collected, the administration's letter pointed Wyden and Udall to classified reports provided to Congress which give the number of circulated intelligence reports that refer to at least one person in the United States and give the number of collection targets later determined to be in the United States.

Wyden, however, said it was unacceptable that the administration was asserting it cannot give Congress "at least a ballpark estimate."

Jim Dempsey, a privacy expert and vice president of the Center for Democracy and Technology, an advocacy group that monitors Internet privacy, said the classified reports to Congress probably mention few people in this country because they deal only with those cases where surveillance was clearly justified.

"What is of concern are the people in the middle," Dempsey said. "These are innocent U.S. citizens and others in the U.S. whose communications were intercepted in the course of targeting non-U.S. persons overseas, but whose connection with terrorism is so non-existent that they don't even merit a mention in a disseminated report. Those people's communications are being listened to, and it is at least relevant to know how many people are in that bucket."

The administration's response was similar to the one the Bush administration gave in December 2007 when the White House Office of Management and Budget said that it would "likely be impossible" to count the number of people located in the United States whose communications were collected by the government.

"Is this still the case?" Wyden and Udall asked in a July 14 letter to Clapper, which elicited a response from Kathleen Turner, director of legislative affairs for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Two months ago, Wyden and Udall raised similar objections to the congressional renewal of Patriot Act provisions that allow broad searches for records in national security investigations.

A newly released report by the American Civil Liberties Union said the public debate over reauthorization of the Patriot Act has been hampered by excessive secrecy. The search provision enables the government to obtain orders from the secret court to seize "any tangible thing" the government says is relevant to a terrorism or espionage probe.

In a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Tuesday, Wyden asked National Security Agency general counsel Matthew Olsen whether the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 has been the subject of "significant secret legal interpretations."

"Let me say yes," Olsen replied. "And then let me add that the answer is that ... in the course of implementing those provisions, the government ? and I was part of this effort ? submits pleadings" to the court, which decides whether to authorize requests for surveillance. In the same vein, Wyden asked Olsen whether legal interpretations of the Patriot Act are being kept secret.

"It is certainly fair to say that there are opinions from the court that are classified," Olsen replied. He said that those opinions have been provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee and that activities undertaken in accordance with those orders are subject to "extensive oversight from across the government."

Vietnamese hold anti-China protest after crackdown (AFP)

HANOI (AFP) ? Police in Vietnam allowed up to 300 peaceful anti-Chinese protesters to march in central Hanoi on Sunday after their suppression of earlier rallies sparked anger on the Internet.

It was the eighth consecutive Sunday that protesters have gathered for an unprecedented series of rallies over tensions in the South China Sea.

Authorities tolerated the first five small protests near the Chinese embassy, but then forcibly dispersed two demonstrations and briefly detained people after talks between Hanoi and Beijing in June.

Sunday's protest took place at a different location, around Hoan Kiem lake, which is a popular meeting place for Hanoi residents and foreign tourists.

Overtly political demonstrations are rare in Vietnam, despite fairly frequent protests in the form of land-rights rallies and strikes by factory workers.

Some demonstrators wore T-shirts objecting to China's maritime claim to essentially all of the South China Sea, called the "East Sea" in Vietnam.

"I want to send a message to China that they stop doing bad things with our country," said Nguyen Quang Thach, 36, who has attended all the rallies.

Vietnam and China have a longstanding dispute over sovereignty of the potentially oil-rich Paracel and Spratly island groups, which straddle vital commercial shipping lanes in the South China Sea.

Tensions flared in May when Vietnam said Chinese marine surveillance vessels cut the exploration cables of an oil survey ship inside the country's exclusive economic zone.

Vietnamese bitterly recall 1,000 years of Chinese occupation and, more recently, a 1979 border war. More than 70 Vietnamese sailors were killed in 1988 when the two sides battled off the Spratlys.

Protesters chanted that the Paracels and Spratlys belong to Vietnam, and carried signs naming military personnel who died in previous clashes with Vietnam's giant neighbour.

At least one man held a picture which allegedly showed a policeman stomping on a demonstrator when officers broke up a similar rally a week earlier.

Video of the alleged incident was posted on the Internet, where independent Vietnamese blogs and opinion flourish despite the arrests of some bloggers. All official media are state controlled.

Protesters had vowed to appeal to the communist-controlled National Assembly, asking it to pass legislation governing demonstrations, if police acted against the latest rally.

"Beating patriots whose only crime is expressing their patriotism against foreign invasion must be seriously and publicly punished," Nguyen Ngoc, a writer, said on the Nguyen Xuan Dien blog, which has become a rallying point for the protesters, many of whom are respected senior intellectuals.

Police made no attempt to stop the orderly demonstrators who marched on the sidewalk around Hoan Kiem lake for about two hours before dispersing.

Another claimant to the Spratlys, the Philippines, has complained this year of Chinese aggression in the disputed waters, where Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan also have claims.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned at a regional forum in Indonesia on Saturday that tensions in the South China Sea threatened peace.

But China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) endorsed new guidelines at the forum designed to reduce tensions in the waters, which Beijing and some ASEAN members hailed as a breakthrough.

Space shuttle prepares to depart station for last time (Reuters)

HOUSTON (Reuters) ? The crew of NASA's final space shuttle mission closed the hatch to the International Space Station for the final time on Monday in preparation for the shuttle's last flight back to Earth.

NASA is watching the path of Tropical Storm Bret off the Atlantic coast of Florida but it is not expected to interfere with Atlantis' planned landing at 5:57 a.m. EDT (0957 GMT) on Thursday.

Before floating through the shuttle's air lock for the final time, Atlantis' four crewmembers left behind two mementos to commemorate the shuttle program's 30-year history: a space shuttle model and an American flag that flew aboard Columbia on the first U.S. shuttle mission in 1981.

It was one in a string of many "lasts" in Atlantis' 13-day mission -- to be followed by the final undocking from the space station early on Tuesday and its scheduled predawn touch-down at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday.

"We're closing a chapter in the history of our nation," space station flight engineer Ron Garan said in a ceremony marking the hatch closing.

The flag will remain affixed to the station's air lock until the air lock swings open to admit astronauts in future years who ride to the station aboard a capsule built by U.S. commercial companies, NASA said.

"We are going to be opening a new era and raising the flag on a new era of exploration," Garan said.

"Thank you for honoring the thousands of people that have been a part of the space shuttle program over the years," Megan McArthur radioed from Mission Control.

Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson was the last shuttle astronaut to leave the station before the shuttle's hatch closed for the final time.

Atlantis is the bookend of 134 previous shuttle missions that have deployed satellites and observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope. The shuttle's crowning accomplishment, NASA says, was carrying to orbit and constructing the space station -- a $100 billion project of 16 countries.

FOOD, CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

Ferguson and his crew delivered more than 5 tonnes of food, clothing, equipment and other supplies that are meant to tide over the station until NASA's newly hired cargo delivery firms begin flying next year.

The end of the program will hit central Florida, Houston and other shuttle operational hubs hard, with thousands of engineers and technicians due to lose their jobs shortly after Atlantis lands.

"I get kind of freaked out and have this sinking feeling in my stomach that lasts five or 10 seconds," said lead shuttle flight director Kwatsi Alibaruho, who will complete his last shuttle shift on Tuesday. "Then I go back to doing an impersonation of a steely-eyed missile man."

Females vs. Males?

I posted this on a few of the FB groups and thought it was an interesting conversation. A topic on this site brought it up, thought some insight from all of you would be great. What do you think about female vs male birds as pets? I constantly hear that males make better bets because they are less aggressive and nippy in nature. I personally agree with my Lovebirds, because all of my males are extremely docile compared to the females which often become quite aggressive during their "hormonal" stages. Especially during their first year. I have also heard the same about ekkies. Do you think it's species specific?

I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs.

For me long term health is more important than any sport. Sometimes adults have to make grown up choices because kids are not mature enough to know the consequences of their choices.

I would have the sports med doc evaluate her and talk to her coaches, if they are truly concerned about her ability to stay healthy in gymnastics, aside from the usual breaks and bruise (!), then perhaps gym is not the sport for her. NOt every body is able to take a sport like gymnastics, it is very hard and even the strongest girls struggle with injuries.

My DD had to quit gym, and then she had to quit T&T and then she had to stop doing any physical activity. She was sad, but she knew that her body couldn't take the strain of gym. In three months she will eb able to do pretty much anything but gym, tramp, bungee jumping and skydiving. So it's all good.
