House approves student loan compromise, reducing interest rates

Now both houses of Congress have passed a compromise bill lowering a recent interest rate hike on student loans. Under the new legislation, which will now move to President Obama's desk, politicians will no longer be responsible for setting the rates.?

U.S. college students will likely pay a reduced interest rate of 3.86 percent on their student loans for the new school year, after lawmakers on Wednesday finally passed a compromise bill that would reverse a recent rate hike.

The?House of Representatives?voted 392-31 in support of a bipartisan deal to lower interest rates on millions of new federal student loans. The?Senate?passed the bill on July 24 and President?Barack Obama?is expected to sign it into law.

The action followed months of partisan bickering, with Democrats and Republicans blaming each other for a politically embarrassing delay that had the potential to cost students and their parents thousands of dollars.

The legislation replaces a system in which?Congress?fixed interest rates every year and substitutes it with a market-based mechanism tied to the government's cost of borrowing and capped to protect borrowers in the event of a severe spike in rates.

The legislation passed just two days before?Congress?recesses for five weeks, after several failed efforts in the House and?Senate.

Interest rates on student loans automatically doubled on July 1 to 6.8 percent after?Congress?failed to meet the deadline to prevent the rate increase.?Congress?has since incorporated a retroactive fix that would keep borrowers of loans originated since July 1 when rates had doubled from paying the higher rate.

The measure passed Wednesday pegs interest rates on student loans to the 10-year Treasury note plus 2.05 percentage points for undergraduates, and plus 3.6 percentage points for graduate student loans.

The interest rate would roughly work out to 3.86 percent this year for undergraduates and 5.42 percent for graduates.

Supporters of the bill say it gets politicians out of the business of setting student loan?rates and provides certainty for students and their families.?

'Long-term fix'

Critics of a market-based system say it fails to offer enough protection against increasing rates as the economy improves.

"This bill provides American college students immediate debt relief on upcoming student loans," said?California?Representative?George Miller, the senior Democrat at the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. "Families battered by the recent recession should have received this relief over a month ago."

In 2007,?Congress?lowered the interest rates on federal subsidized Stafford loans to 3.4 percent. That lower rate was due to expire last year, but?Congress?extended it for another year rather than argue about a replacement for it during an election year.

Under the caps in the new plan, if market rates rise, undergraduates could pay as high as 8.25 percent and graduates as much as 9.5 percent. The rate could go to 10.5 percent for PLUS loans for parents who borrow to pay for their children's college.

"We wanted to get out of the partisan squabbling that has been happening in this city every year - let the market do it in a way that is fair to students and the taxpayer," said?Education Committee?Chairman Representative?John Kline, a?Minnesota?Republican.

"After months of great uncertainty, students can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that interest rates on subsidized federal loans for college won't double from last year and a long-term fix will be in place to avoid these annual political chess matches over the loan program," said Peter McPherson, president of the?Association of Public?and Land-grant Universities.

UN experts to probe alleged Syria chemical attacks

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? U.N. experts will travel to Syria as soon as possible to investigate three alleged incidents of chemical weapons, the United Nations announced Wednesday.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said the green light for the investigation followed "the understanding reached with the government of Syria" during last week's visit to Damascus by U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane and the head of the chemical weapons investigation team, Ake Sellstrom.

He said Sellstrom's team will visit Khan al-Assal, a village on the southwestern outskirts of the embattled city of Aleppo, which was captured by the rebels last week and was under attack by government forces Wednesday. The government and rebels blame each other for a purported chemical attack on the village on March 19 that killed at least 30 people.

Nesirky did not give any details of the other two incidents to be investigated. A well-informed U.N. diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions on the issue have been private, said Sellstrom is expected to choose the two other sites based on the technical and scientific information the U.N. has received.

Syria initially asked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the Khan al-Assal incident and balked at a broader investigation sought by the U.N. chief after Britain, France and the United States sent the U.N. information about a dozen other alleged attacks in Homs, Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere.

Last week's Damascus visit by Kane and Sellstrom led to Syria's agreement to the probe of three incidents.

Nesirky said "The secretary-general remains mindful of other reported incidents and the mission will also continue to seek clarification from the member states concerned."

The diplomat stressed that the chemical weapons experts should have access to all 13 sites.

The mandate of the investigation team is to report on whether chemical weapons were used, and if so which chemical weapon, but not to determine the responsibility for an attack.

In June, the United States said it had conclusive evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons against opposition forces. That crossed what President Barack Obama had called a "red line" and prompted a U.S. decision to send arms and ammunition to the opposition, not just humanitarian aid and non-lethal material like armored vests and night goggles.

Google Glass Invite A Friend: Tough Decisions

As you may have heard, Google began giving Gmail-like invites to Google Glass users. In short, when Gmail launched, Google let those with Gmail accounts to invite others to get Gmail (it was a limited beta as well). Now, Google has opened up to a select number of Glass Explorers the ability to invite friends to purchase Google Glass.

Here are some of the posts I spotted on this on Google+.

Here are screen shots of what the invite to invite email looks like and what happens when you click invite a friend:

click for full size

click for full size

This is an incredibly tough decision for a Glass Explorer. Who would you invite? A fellow developer? A friend who is not a developer? A family member? Someone who pays you off? ;-)

Google said they have sent out all the invites to invite for now and there may be more in the future.

I suspect Google had some excess Glass devices to sell because some of the #ifihadglass winners probably decided not to go through with the large purchase. So this is their way to get rid of that excess.

Bored again: Does the iPhone lull have you checking out other phones?

With no iPhone refresh expected before the fall, do the dog days of summer have some checking out rival smartphones?

It's easy to succumb to envy in the mobile world. The iPhone 5 is currently the oldest flagship smartphone on the market. Meanwhile Android OEM's such as Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC, and Motorola seem to be releasing new phones every week. Nokia is dropping new Windows Phones fairly regularly, and even BlackBerry has put out three new phones in the last six months. Against all that, it's easy to see why gadget geeks with big phone love could be eyeing - or even trying - alternate phones while they wait. Given some thought the iPhone 5 was boring at launch, is it possible even iPhone owners are bored now?

I feel like I'm growing more and more bored with my iPhone. But my brief affairs with android never turn out well. I always come back. I've had the iPhones 4-5 with android in between. Anyone feeling the same?
Shanicenicolle, iMore forums member

The phone market is increasingly competitive and phones are even picking up elements of fashion. For those who can afford multiple phones, or people in the industry who's jobs require they own and use all the major platforms, it can certainly be nice to be able to change phones and experiences like you do clothes. Sort of like having multiple sets of jewelry, or multiple cars to drive, or hair colors to try, or anything that shakes things up.

I am finding myself bored right now and have jumped ship a few times only to come back very quickly. I again am contemplating test driving the HTC One once it arrives on Verizon. With Sense 5 covering Android it appears to make Android clean and simple but still allow for options if you so desire. If I do, I know I will likely come back, but it's nice to just scratch the itch every now and then.
bgl321, iMore forums member

Looking elsewhere isn't a bad thing. Apple would rather you didn't, of course, but for many it becomes an eye-opening experience. Working for Mobile Nations, I use all the major platforms on a daily basis, and while each one has its own advantages, each one also has its own drawbacks. There are times Android feels liberating to me, others when it frustrates me to tears.

I have the same problem. I'm bored. But I went and got the s4 and came running back to iPhone after two days. I just had too many issues with it overheating. Everything on my sd card got deleted and the camera quality wasn't as good as the iPhone 5 so I was missing that. iphonelvr, iMore forums member

For some, jailbreak seems like a happy middle-ground. There's no additional hardware expense involved, but it opens up new functionality and opportunities for customization, beyond what stock iOS allows. It does

Nope I love my iPhone and I'm mad but glad with myself that I left for a brief stint with Android cause I now truly appreciate the stability, ecosystem and just down right usability of iOS
- swarlos, iMore forums member

Ecosystem is a fine point worth making also, and something we touched upon in our recent Talk Mobile discussions. iOS and the iPhone has the exclusive benefits of Apple's vast media ecosystem. Whatever the song or album, the movie, the book, there's a pretty damn good shout that iTunes will stock it. It's the same story for apps, with an impressive and huge array of apps and games available. Looking through the Windows Phone Store and BlackBerry World in-particular, there are still some glaring gaps that need to be filled.

Nope. Not the least bit bored. I love my iPhone, and all my iOS devices, more than ever. I especially can't wait for iOS 7. It's going to make everything else look worse than it already does.
- jclisenby, iMore forums ambassador

Then, at the other end of the scale, excitement shouldn't be higher than it is right now. OK, we're still in a bit of a hardware drought, but Apple has recently unveiled the biggest new version of iOS since the iPhone first launched. Beyond a complete visual redesign, iOS 7 packs a ton of features both user-facing and under the hood that are set to transform the iOS experience all over again. Those who have tried it ? rightly or wrongly ? are excited, as are the folks who haven't. It's like we're waiting to get a brand new phone, without having to buy one. I know I'm excited, as are a whole lot of other folks in the community.

The bottom line is that no-one, not even Apple, can stop you personally getting bored by a device. It's not always a bad thing because the grass isn't always greener, and sometimes it takes trying something new to make you realize that. But, at the same time we're in the midst of exciting times for iOS. When iOS 7 hits sometime in the fall it will reinvigorate the platform and hopefully excite those who may be finding themselves hit by the boredom fairies.

There's a great discussion brewing in the iMore forums on this very topic, so be sure to jump on over there and have your say!

Edwin Moses running for WADA president

LONDON (AP) ? Former Olympic hurdles great Edwin Moses is a candidate to become the next president of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The IOC says the two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles submitted his candidacy last week.

Moses is the third candidate to enter the race, joining IOC vice president Craig Reedie of Britain and former IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch of France.

Moses, who won gold medals in 1976 and 1984, has been active in the anti-doping movement since retiring from competition. He is currently chairman of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

The IOC executive board will put forward one candidate for the WADA presidency at its meeting in Moscow on Aug. 9.

It's up to the Olympic movement to nominate a successor to former Australian minister John Fahey, who steps down in November after six years in the job.

Detroit Bankruptcy Trial Could Be Off To Speedy Start, Beginning Date Of October 23 Proposed

detroit bankruptcy trial date

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, right, and State-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr, address the media during a news conference in Detroit, Friday, July 19, 2013. The judge in Detroit's bankruptcy case proposed Oct. 23 for the start date of a trial on potential objections to the city's eligibility to file what would be the biggest Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

July 30 (Reuters) - U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes on Tuesday proposed speedy deadlines for Detroit's municipal bankruptcy filing, including an October trial to determine if the city can pursue bankruptcy and a March 1, 2014 date for it to file a reorganization plan.
The judge proposed Oct. 23 for the start of a trial on potential objections to Detroit's eligibility to file what would be the biggest Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
The proposed dates and deadlines will be the subject of a hearing in federal bankruptcy court in Detroit on Friday.
Rhodes' schedule is more ambitious in some areas than the one proposed by Kevyn Orr, Detroit's state-appointed emergency manager, after he filed the city's bankruptcy petition on July 18. In the filing, Orr set a goal of concluding the city's bankruptcy case no later than September 2014.
Doug Bernstein, a Detroit-based bankruptcy lawyer at Plunkett Cooney, said the schedule indicates the judge wants to move the case along quickly. But doing so in a politically sensitive case like Detroit's may prove challenging.
"He's got to do a balancing act," Bernstein said. "The longer a case languishes, the more it costs everybody, so he's very aware of that. But he's got to balance that with affording all the parties due process."
The schedules put forward by Orr and Rhodes would have Detroit moving through bankruptcy court more quickly than Stockton, California, which took nearly a year to pass through the eligibility phase alone. With more than $18 billion in liabilities at the time it filed for bankruptcy, Detroit's debt load dwarfs that of Stockton, which listed liabilities of around $1 billion when it filed in June 2012.
Judge Rhodes proposed an Aug. 19 deadline for creditors to file objections to Detroit's case to proceed through bankruptcy court. Orr, a former corporate bankruptcy attorney, had proposed the same deadline, while requesting a hearing on eligibility objections "as soon as the court's schedule will permit."
Rhodes last week suspended lawsuits pending in Michigan courts by city workers, retirees and pension funds seeking to derail Detroit's bankruptcy petition, putting his court in full control of the case.
The next step will determine if the city is eligible for bankruptcy. Detroit must prove that it is insolvent and that it made a good-faith effort to negotiate with creditors owed more than $18 billion or that there are too many creditors to make negotiating feasible.

Mozilla partners with BlackBerry to fuzz out software bugs

DNP Mozilla partners with BlackBerry to build bughunting tool

You wouldn't normally think of Mozilla and BlackBerry working together, but now they have, and all in the name of hunting down software bugs. Specifically, they're working together on advancing Peach, an open source tool that lets them "fuzz" out flaws in software, especially web browsers. Mozilla says they've already successfully implemented Peach to scurry out problems in HTML5 features like image and audio/video formats, fonts, WebGL, WebAudio and WebRTC, which should lead to a more secure Firefox browser and OS. To help that along, Mozilla has also announced Minion, a security testing platform that displays a smaller yet more pertinent set of data so that every developer can sift through it, not just security professionals. Together with BlackBerry, which has a long history with security processes and its own proprietary fuzzing software, they hope that their shared knowledge will lead to a safer web for everyone.

The crash happened near the station of Granges-pres-Marnand shortly before 7 p.m. (1700 GMT) on a regional line about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the capital, Bern. It came just days after 79 people were killed in a high-speed?train?derailment in Spain.

Photographs from the Swiss site showed the two regional?trains?locked together, partly lifted off the tracks by the force of the collision.

Police said several ambulances, fire engines and a helicopter were involved in the rescue operation. Rescuers had not yet been able to reach the driver's cabin of one of the?trains, said the police in the canton (state) of Vaud in a statement.

News website 20min.ch quoted Patricia Claivaz of the Swiss rail company CFF as saying the trapped man was the driver. It was unclear if he was alive.

According to police, the five people who were seriously injured were taken to the hospital in the nearby city of Lausanne.

Earlier, Swiss media had cited police as saying 44 were injured, four of them seriously. It wasn't immediately clear why the injury figure had been lowered.

Switzerland's?rail system is considered among the best and safest in the world. Accidents are rare, though three years ago the country's popular Glacier Express tourist?train?derailed in the Alps, killing one person and injuring 42.

Tony Stewart flips five times in Canada sprint car race

Source: USA TODAY

Add an end-over-end flip and crash to Tony Stewart?s wild week.

Stewart, racing a sprint car for fun Monday night at the Ohsweken Speedway dirt track in Ontario, Canada, flipped five times while racing for the lead with Shane Stewart (no relation). The three-time NASCAR Cup champion appeared to run up on the cushion and get sideways, which sent his car tumbling.

He was uninjured and walked away from the crash, but it certainly got his attention.

Spokesan Mike Arning told USA TODAY Sports in an email: ?Tony Stewart is fine. He walked away from last night?s accident unhurt and will race tonight in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series feature event at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada. (He is the defending race winner.)?

It?s been quite an eventful week for Stewart.

On Wednesday, he hosted NASCAR?s first dirt race in 43 years at the Eldora Speedway track he owns in Ohio. The race was widely praised, and Stewart got much of the credit.

Then it was on to Sunday?s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Ryan Newman won the race while driving a Stewart-owned car (Stewart finished fourth).

Stewart is often in motion, though, and he planned to keep packing in races as part of his hectic schedule.

?I think I race every day (this) week except for Wednesday, and that?s a test,? Stewart said after Indianapolis. ?So a lot of those days are doubled-up days. We have a busy week. Can?t think of a better week to celebrate.?

He called racing at Ohsweken a ?night of rest,? but he certainly didn?t plan on spending part of it upside down.

Dozens injured in Swiss train wreck

GRANGES-PRES-MARNAND, Switzerland (Reuters) - Two trains collided head-on in Switzerland on Monday evening, injuring about 35 people, five seriously, police said.

The driver of one of the trains was still unaccounted for and thought to be inside the wreckage, at Granges-pr?s-Marnand in the canton of Vaud, police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel said.

"These are regional trains. The speeds are a little lower and even if one deeply regrets the likely loss of life of one person as well as five serious injuries, the situation could have been much more catastrophic," Sauterel said.

He said it was too early to try to ascertain the cause of the crash.

One of the injured was taken by helicopter to Lausanne. Others were treated on the spot by paramedics or taken to hospital by ambulance.

About 40 people were on the two trains, one of which was heading to Lausanne, the other was going to Payerne.

Seventy-nine people were killed in a train crash in Spain last week, one of the worst in decades.

Samsung Rigged the S4 to Unnaturally Perform Better in Benchmarks

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a damn fine phone. It's fast, it's big, it's thin and it's completely deserving to be in most people's pockets. But apparently that's not enough for Samsung. Samsung has gotten caught cheating benchmark tests to make itself look better. Basically, the S4 is specifically tweaked to be better at benchmarking than anything else it does.

Solid Energy fined over miner's serious injury

Published: 8:00PM Tuesday July 30, 2013 Source: ONE News

Solid Energy's Spring Creek mine. - Source: ONE News

Failing to protect a miner from a large block of falling coal at Solid Energy's Spring Creek mine has cost the company a fine of $71,000 and reparations to the victim of $46,000.

The company pleaded guilty to one charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act and was sentenced today at the Greymouth District Court.

Paul Burton, an experienced miner, was working underground in July last year cutting a connection between two parallel roadways when the large block of coal fell on the back of his neck and body, knocking him to the ground.

He spent time in Burwood Hospital's spinal unit after the incident and has been left with serious spinal injuries that make movement difficult.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said its investigation discovered five of the company's safety requirements were not followed.

"Safety critical steps like these have been developed because people have died in the past. The steps aren't optional - they are mandatory and each step must be followed," said Tony Forster, the Chief Inspector Mining of the Ministry's High Hazards Unit.

The company should also have installed a mesh cage or curtain in the area to protect employees from the risk of falling coal, Mr Forster said.

This technology has been available for some time, he said.

"New Zealand may be isolated geographically but that does not mean we should be behind with health and safety developments."

Solid Energy is this country's largest and most experienced coal mining company, and its failures resulted in serious, long-term injury to an employee who should have been able to expect to go home safe from his shift at the mine," Mr Forster said.

Union welcomes penalty

The EPMU is welcoming the fine and reparations imposed.

EPMU organiser Garth Elliott said Mr Burton's right side was paralysed when the slab of coal fell on him.

He had to undergo major surgery to repair spinal cord damage, including having two plates inserted into his neck, Mr Elliott said. Mr Burton still suffers from some paralysis and is unlikely to ever work as a miner again, he said.

He said it is appropriate that Solid Energy has been fined for its serious safety failings.

"The injuries Paul has suffered as a result of Solid Energy's failures have impacted his earnings for the rest of his working life. These reparations are welcome but they can never compensate Paul for what he has lost."

Mines are hazardous places to work but there are steps that can be taken to minimise risks, Mr Elliott said.

"This outcome shows the importance of stronger safety laws in our mines. We hope Solid Energy has learned from its failings and puts processes in place to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

    Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Android 4.3 brings TRIM support, improves performance on the 2012 Nexus 7

If you haven?t experienced it first hand, you must have at least heard about the performance issues plaguing the first generation Nexus 7 tablet that was launched last year. Although the tablet worked wonderfully when it was released, performance degraded rapidly over the course of a year to a point where it became nearly unusable.

That is about to change now with the advent of the Android 4.3 update because it brings just what the doctor ordered for the Nexus 7 to solve its performance issues: TRIM support.

When you delete content off a memory, the actual data is not removed from the storage space but is simply conveyed to the user that it is. When you transfer data to the drive again, it is then overwriting on top of existing data rather than writing to empty blocks. This means that if you frequently load up your storage with content over a period of time it reduces performance of the drive because an overwrite on existing data takes longer than writing to an empty block. What TRIM does is that it lets the operating system inform the memory which blocks of data are no longer in use, so they can be wiped and be available for garbage collection, so the next time you transfer data to the drive it is writing it to empty blocks, which is much faster.

Post Android 4.3, some users are already reporting improvement in the performance of their Nexus 7 tablet. Nexus 10 users may see similar improvement in speed, although things weren?t as bad on that device compared to the Nexus 7. This is a useful little addition which makes looking forward to receiving the Android 4.3 update a lot more worthwhile.

    German consumer confidence heads higher

BERLIN (AP) ? German consumer confidence is continuing to rise on the back of a strong labor market and the prospect of more robust economic growth, a survey showed Tuesday.

The GfK research institute said its forward-looking consumer climate index rose to 7 points for August from 6.8 in July. That's the highest level since September 2007, when the index hit 7.3 points.

"The continued stability of employment prospects and a moderate rate of inflation caused optimism to rise," the GfK said.

Recent economic data have bolstered expectations that the German economy, Europe's biggest, is on track to rebound from a lackluster performance over the winter.

Germany's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in June, which contrasts sharply with other countries that use the euro, such as Greece and Spain, where the jobless rate is over 25 percent.

Germany's Federal Statistical Office said the country's annual inflation rate ticked up to 1.9 percent in July from 1.8 percent the previous month. It pointed to a 5.7 percent increase in food prices and a 2.8 percent rise in energy costs.

Judge: Fed chair Bernanke should be deposed in AIG bailout case

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee July 18, 2013 in Washington, DC.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke should testify in the lawsuit by American International Group Inc's former chief Maurice "Hank" Greenberg against the United States over the insurer's 2008 bailout, a judge ruled on Monday.

Judge Thomas Wheeler of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims rejected the government's effort to keep Bernanke from being deposed, saying the Fed chairman was a "central figure" in the decision to bail out AIG.

"Indeed, the court cannot fathom having to decide this multi-billion dollar claim without the testimony of such a key government decision maker," Wheeler wrote. "These facts constitute 'extraordinary circumstances' for the taking of Mr. Bernanke's deposition."

    (Watch: Who will succeed Bernanke?)

Greenberg's Starr International Co, which once had a 12 percent stake in AIG, is suing over the government's taking of a 79.9 percent stake in the insurer in September 2008 and a separate 1-for-20 reverse stock split in June 2009.

Greenberg's attorney, Alanna Rutherford of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, said his team was pleased with the judge's decision.

Earlier this year Greenberg tried to force AIG to join his suit against the government over the $182.3 billion bailout, an effort the company ultimately rejected.

Greenberg is seeking tens of billions of dollars in compensation over the losses he incurred when the government rescued the company.

"Because of Mr. Bernanke's personal involvement in the decision-making process to bail out AIG, it is improbable that Plaintiff would be able to obtain the same testimony or evidence from other persons or sources," Wheeler wrote in his four-page order.

Wheeler said the court would extend "appropriate deference and courtesies" to Bernanke in scheduling the testimony; the judge also said he would attend the deposition himself.

It is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16, the order noted.

    Reuters contributed to thisreport.

Ohio bills would permit ?Stand Your Ground? guns in church and daycare

With the ink on the George Zimmerman ?not guilty? verdict barely dry, another state appears ready to consider a Florida-style ?Stand Your Ground? law.? Add to that legislation to ease restrictions on concealed handguns in the most unacceptable places, along with a bill which would allow gun silencers.

This time it is Ohio?s turn.? And things are looking outrageous right now in the Buckeye State.

Three bills introduced in the Ohio legislature are at issue.? The first is House Bill 203, which would bring ?Stand Your Ground? or ?Shoot First? to Ohio.? If passed, the measure would allow a person to use lethal force without a duty to retreat.? The legislation, which the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus opposes, is nearly identical to the Florida law implicated in the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin.

    Silencers to hunt birds?

Meanwhile, House Bill 234 would allow silencers?yes, silencers??while hunting game birds and wild quadrupeds.?? Another piece of legislation, HB 191, would change the definition of an automatic weapon from a gun that fires over 31 rounds without reloading to a weapon that fires multiple rounds with a single trigger pull.? Gun control advocates such as Toby Hoover, Executive Director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence believe the motive for HB 191 is to ensure that there are unlimited rounds in a magazine.

But it gets worse.? HB 210 would undermine public safety by prohibiting the police from destroying confiscated guns and bullets, and forcing law enforcement to sell the weapons and ammo to a federally licensed dealer.? Alternatively, the police could sell the confiscated guns ?for sporting use or as a museum piece or collectors? item.?

And saving the best?or worst?for last, HB 231 is a particularly horrendous piece of legislation.? Stand Your Ground is insidious enough, but this bill would lift the ban ?against carrying a concealed handgun onto institutions of higher education, places of worship, day-care facilities, aircraft, certain government facilities, public areas of airport terminals and police stations, and school safety zones.?

Guns in daycare centers and churches?? Feel safer?

?If the nut cases can get in with guns, then the good guys need to be able to defend themselves and shoot back,? said State Rep. John Becker, a sponsor of HB 191 and 210 and cosponsor of HB 231.

Rep. Becker has it all wrong.? Perhaps the people we should really worry about are the lawmakers such as Rep. Becker who write bad laws that put our children in danger, enable more gun violence and sanction more senseless deaths.

?Given that Ohio is now losing jobs, and that the economic recovery has yet to impact most Ohioans, these bills just don?t make sense,? said State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cuyahoga and Lake Counties). ?We should be working to find ways to invest in early childhood education or fund critical public services at the local level?some communities cannot even afford to keep the street lights on. These bills are just distractions at a time when our constituents are asking for real solutions,? she added.

    Ohio is a gun conduit

According to federal data released in June, Ohio is a gun conduit.? The state is a leading source of guns used in crimes in other states, which, of course, the criminals love.? In 2012, 1,601 firearms were purchased in Ohio and then tied to crimes committed in 36 states, including 183 crimes committed in New York.? Another 5,375 guns were linked to Ohio crimes.

?People know they can come to Ohio, get a gun, and take it someplace where there are tougher restrictions,? Columbus Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell told the Columbus Dispatch. ?It happens at gun shows in the sticks and through underground schemes on city streets.?

Meanwhile, gun control supporters believe that these ill-conceived laws will only create more Trayvon Martins.? ?It was about race and guns,? said Toby Hoover of Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence concerning the George Zimmerman case. ?If we want this to stop we will have to act to change these laws of violence.?

With over 1,000 people killed by gun violence in Ohio each year, some reasonable solutions include mandatory gun registration; banning assault weapons, ?cop-killer? bullets and high-capacity clips; promoting safe gun storage with a childproof gun law; keeping guns out of the hands of children through a juvenile possession law, and closing loopholes allowing unlicensed dealers to sell 40% of the guns in Ohio.

Yet the Ohio gun bills coming down the pike are divorced from reality and common sense.? They speak to the fringe extremism of the gun lobby, and the greed of the lawmakers under their control.? But sensible people can stop this foolishness, and they must.
