Iran Inaugurates President Hassan Rohani

?

Iran Inaugurates President Hassan Rohani

?

by Stephen Lendman

?

On June 14, Iranians elected Rohani decisively. He won a clear first round majority. He'll serve four years. He's head of state.

?

Obama failed to congratulate him. He hasn't recognized his legitimacy. He's a longtime distinguished leader. He's held numerous high level positions.

?

He combines diplomacy, politics and scholarship. He's called the "Diplomat Sheikh." He's written many books, articles and research papers.

?

He urges peace and reconciliation. He promises "government of hope and prudence." He pledged "constructive interaction with the world."

?

He faces enormous challenges. US/Israeli imperialism matters most. It's lawless. It's belligerent. It's destructive. It's unrelenting.?

?

It targets independent governments. It wants satraps replacing responsible leaders. It wants subservient pro-Western states in place of sovereign ones.?

?

On August 3, The New York Times headlined "Iran's President Puts New Focus on the Economy," saying:

?

On Saturday, Rohani vowed "to work with the outside world to lift 'oppressive sanctions???' " They're illegal. They harm ordinary Iranians most.

?

"People called for change and improvement in their living standards. They want to live better," said Rohani.

?

The Washington Post headlined "Iran's new president takes oath of office, asks West to abandon 'language of sanctions.' "

?

He hopes to ease economic pressure on his people. He asked foreign leaders to respect Iran responsibly. Negotiate fairly, he stressed, saying:

?

"If you seek a suitable answer, speak to Iran through the language of respect, not through the language of sanctions." ?

?

Negotiations require "bilateral trust building, mutual respect and the lessening of hostilities."

?

Sunday's inaugural was impressive. Leaders and other officials from over 50 countries attended. They did so for the first time since Iran's 1979 revolution. They came to pay respect.

?

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei officially endorsed Rohani publicly. He did so during a Saturday ceremony.

?

Rohani promised responsible leadership. "The Iran that (its enemies) predicted would be dragged into internal dispute and face a chasm between the system and the people according to their plans created a great epic and disappointed (them) through the vibrant participation of people from all walks of life," he said.

?

Iranians expect leaders to create stability, allay their concerns, and resolve problems responsibly, he added.

?

"I believe that the power of the government lies in strengthening popular support and fulfilling the pledges made to the people. This commitment requires loyalty and honesty with the people."?

?

The electoral outcome "was not the result of a chasm between the people and the ruling system since the Iranian people chose a person as president who had serious responsibilities for years in the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran."?

?

"The election demonstrated the Iranian people's pursuit of dignity."

?

"The orientation of the administration is toward saving Iran?s economy, interacting with the world constructively, and reviving morality."

?

"We will take new steps for the elevation of the status of the Iranian people, while serving national interests, and for the removal of the sanctions."

?

He'll pursue a moderate path. He prioritizes improving living standards. He'll avoid "hasty" decisions.

?

After his speech, Ayatollah Khamenei said efforts should address economic and scientific issues.

?

"Political (ones) are also important. I approve of the comments that the respected president made in regard to dealing wisely with various international issues, political issues, issues concerning international relations, etc."?

?

"But this should be done with a wise and foresighted approach."?

?

"However, we have enemies who do not understand the language of logic."?

?

They "have been unable to undermine the foundations of the Islamic system or prevent the country from making progress."

?

He praised Rohani. He stressed his sincere efforts. He served Iran responsibly throughout the post-1979 period.

?

Friday was Quds Day. It's commemorated on Ramadan's last day. It expresses solidarity with Occupied Palestinians.?

?

It opposes Israeli control of Jerusalem. It's a universally recognized international city. It's been so since 1947. Quds is its Arabic name.

?

Rohani addressed the occasion. He was misquoted. It's done repeatedly. It's done irresponsibly.?

?

Western leaders twist his words. They do so against other independent leaders. It's done for political advantage. Media scoundrels repeat Big Lies irresponsibly. They do it repeatedly.?

?

They're addicted to lying. Perhaps they lost perspective. Maybe they can't distinguish between fact and fiction.

?

They misquoted Rohani calling Israel "a wound that???needs to be removed." Netanyahu responded saying:

?

"We are standing 100% by our (earlier) statement regarding Rohani. We knew the Iranians would hurry to deny it, but we are not retracting our statement."?

?

"Rohani has shown his true colors sooner than expected. This is what the man thinks and it is the action plan of the Iranian regime."

?

"There is a new president, but the goal of the regime has not changed - to develop nuclear weapons to threaten Israel, the Middle East and peace and security in the entire world."

?

He's unrelating. He menaces world peace. He heads a nuclear armed and dangerous regime. It's Israel's most extremist in history.?

?

It's why today is the most perilous time in world history.

Rohani's a different kind of leader. His inaugural speech showed it. So did his Quds day comments.

?

Accurately translated, he said:

?

"Quds day, which is in memorial of Imam (Khomeini), is a day that people present the unity of Islam against any type of oppression or aggression."

?

"And in any case, in our region, it is an old wound that has been sitting on the body of the Islamic world, in the shadow of the occupation of the holy land of Palestine and the dear Quds."?

?

"And this day, in fact, is a remembrance that Muslim people will not forget this historical right and will always stand against oppression and aggression."

?

He spoke accurately, responsibly and honestly. Occupied Palestine's a "wound???on the body of the Islamic world." It affects humanity.

?

It's scandalous. It's oppressive. It demands undoing. It's essential for equity, justice and peace.

?

A Final Comment

?

Since 1979, America's been hostile to Iran. Obama refuses to recognize Rohani's legitimacy.

?

On August 4, a duplicitous White House statement headlined "Statement by the Press Secretary on the Inauguration of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran," saying:

?

"On the occasion of Dr. Hojjatoleslam Hassan Rouhani?s inauguration today as the Islamic Republic of Iran's seventh president, we again congratulate the Iranian people for making their voices heard during Iran?s election."?

?

"We note that President Rouhani recognized his election represented a call by the Iranian people for change, and we hope the new Iranian government will heed the will of the voters by making choices that will lead to a better life for the Iranian people."?

?

"The inauguration of President Rouhani presents an opportunity for Iran to act quickly to resolve the international community?s deep concerns over Iran's nuclear program."?

?

"Should this new government choose to engage substantively and seriously to meet its international obligations and find a peaceful solution to this issue, it will find a willing partner in the United States."

?

Obama addressed Iranians. He spurned Rohani. He did so irresponsibly. Tehran prioritizes peace and stability.?

?

It wants equitable relations with all nations. It wants constructive change. Washington's no honest partner.

?

Permanent war is official policy. Independent governments aren't tolerated. Advancing America's imperium matters most.

?

On August 4, Syria's President Assad congratulated Rohani. He urged boosting strategic relations.

?

He stressed doing so "in all fields." He encouraged it for mutual interests. Unity's effective resistance.

?

Rohani condemned Western-sponsored terrorists. They're waging war on Syria. He's confident they'll lose. He urges peaceful conflict resolution.

?

He thanked Assad for his genuine support. He said both countries stand united. They're together against common challenges. Resistance is their best defense.

Susan G. Komen Commits $4.5 Million to Environmental Research in Breast Cancer

?

Part of 2013 Research Portfolio Aimed at Toughest Questions in Breast Cancer?

DALLAS ? August 1, 2013 ? Susan G. Komen? today announced $4.5 million in new research grants specifically aimed at understanding the role that the environment may play in breast cancer development. ?

The environmental grants will be part of more than $42 million in new 2013 research grants announced today by the world's largest breast cancer organization. This year's investment brings the total amount that Komen has invested in breast cancer research since its founding in 1982 to more than $790 million, making Komen the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government.?

"These environmental grants will build on research that we have previously funded to expand our knowledge of the way that toxins and other factors contribute to breast cancer development," said Komen's Chief Mission Officer Chandini Portteus. "At the same time, we continue to invest in research along the entire breast cancer continuum, from prevention, to early detection, to more personalized treatments for metastatic and aggressive disease."?

The 2013 environmental grants will build on Komen's groundbreaking work in 2011 with the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which examined the state of the science on environment issues in breast cancer development. The Komen-funded IOM report recommended large-scale research over the course of a woman's life, with a goal of developing interventions that can reduce breast cancer risk. Based on that report, Komen sought proposals for environmental research.?

The five grants announced today include separate studies into:?

The impact of radiation exposure on breast cancer development and in treatment ?

The impact of pollutants in areas where cancer rates are disproportionately high ?

The impact of air pollution on breast cancer development and ?

The role of synthetic chemicals called phthalates. ?

Specifically, Komen plans to fund:?

  • Two grants totaling $1.4 million to Brigham and Women's Medical Center in Boston, including:?
    • $955,000 grant to Rulla Tamimi, Sc.D., to study cancer "clusters," that is, areas of the country where breast cancer rates tend to be higher. The study will attempt to determine the role of exposure to air pollution, ultraviolet light and other toxins on breast cancer risk during the course of a woman's life. ?
    • $450,000 to Thomas Ahern, Ph.D., to better understand the role of phthalates ? synthetic chemicals found in consumer products and medications ? in breast cancer development.?
  • Two studies totaling nearly $2 million to examine the role of radiation in breast cancer development and treatment. These include:?
    • A $1 million grant to Duke University Medical Center's David Kirsch, Ph.D., to study how radiation used in breast cancer treatment affects the heart, and seek ways to minimize heart damage in women who receive radiation treatment.?
    • A $995,000 grant to Ioannis Secholoulos, Ph.D., at Emory Universityin Atlanta to develop a new method to more accurately measure the amount of radiation a patient receives during routine screenings over her lifetime, with a goal of ultimately enabling healthcare providers to limit radiation exposure, if necessary. ?
  • A fifth grant for $995,000 to Anna Wu, Ph.D., of the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, to study the effects of air pollution on breast cancer development, with a specific investigation into minority populations.?

"In each of these grants, we are attempting to move beyond theories to a solid base of scientific evidence to understand the specific role of environmental exposures and breast cancer development," Portteus said. Komen has already invested nearly $14 million into 38 research grants studying environmental and lifestyle factors that may affect breast cancer risk, such as chemicals, diet, weight, exercise and alcohol use. ?

The remainder of Komen's 2013 research portfolio will fund research along the entire cancer continuum and includes studies into prevention, screening, personalized treatments for aggressive and metastatic disease, and strategies to improve breast cancer outcomes in diverse populations. ?

Komen's research investment is one part of the organization's overall mission to end breast cancer through science, community health outreach, advocacy and global programs. Komen has also invested more than $1.5 billion since its founding into community health programs that provide payments for treatments, screening for low-income and uninsured women, patient navigation programs, and financial and social support to women and men facing breast cancer. ?

Other highlights of Komen's 2013 grant portfolio include:?

Metastatic Research?

  • $5 million for six studies into new and personalized treatments for metastatic and aggressive breast cancers, including grants to:?
    • ?Andrea Richardson, M.D., Ph.D. at Dana-Farber Cancer Center will receive $1 million to help identify the process by which tumors survive and conserve energy during their rapid growth. Richardson also will investigate using the malaria drug chloroquinine, with chemotherapy, to improve treatment response in these tumors.??
    • Komen Scholar Lisa Carey, M.D. at UNC-Chapel Hill will receive a $225,000 grant to better understand and develop treatments for metastatic disease.?

Screening ?

  • $2 million for three new studies on more cost-effective and sensitive screening methods. These include:?
    • $225,000 to Komen Scholar Lori Pierce, M.D. at the University of Michigan to identify the genetic underpinnings of resistance to radiotherapy in inflammatory breast cancer patients and to create targeted therapies to reverse that resistance.?
    • $1 million to Andrew Maidment, Ph.D. of the University of Pennsylvania to design and test a new, three-dimensional breast imaging system. The enhanced imaging should allow doctors to more accurately diagnose breast cancer without requiring women to be called back for additional x-ray based imaging.?

Disparities in Outcomes?

  • $1.7 million for three studies aimed at eliminating disparities in breast cancer outcomes for women of color, including:??
    • $225,000 to Komen Scholar Melissa Bondy, Ph.D. of the Baylor College of Medicine to continue investigating key genetic alterations in DNA from early stage breast tumors, with a goal of better predicting which tumors will recur. The study also will investigate different ethnic groups which may contribute to disparities in breast cancer survival.??
    • $967,445 to Valerie McCormack, Ph.D. of the International Agency for Research on Cancer to identify the reasons for low survival rates of women diagnosed with breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.?
$1.7 million for three studies aimed at eliminating disparities in breast cancer outcomes for women of color, including:??

Immunology?

  • $4 million for four studies investigating the role that the immune system plays in breast cancer development and progression. These include: ?
    • $996,691 to Joseph Baar, M.D., Ph.D. of Case Western Reserve University to design a vaccine against breast cancer recurrence in patients with metastatic breast cancer. ?
    • $1 million to Donald McDonnell, Ph.D. of Duke University Medical Center to investigate and target a protein called CaMKK2 that is expressed in immune cells commonly found within breast tumors. These immune cells serve to "protect" the tumor from recognition by the patient's body, thus, the goal of the study is understand how to overcome that protective response and target the tumor for treatment.?

A complete list of Komen's 2013 research funding* can be found here.?

*Funding is contingent on a signed contract?

Right around this time last summer we took note of a new US-France urban algae farming collaboration that combines algae biofuel production with wastewater treatment. Considering all the political poop that certain US legislators have lobbed in the direction of France over the past ten years or so, that?s a bit of poetic justice for you, especially since the project has been a success so far and it passed an important milestone last week. FAU football opens up fall camp

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Florida Atlantic University?s football team officially began the 2013 football season with its first official practice of fall on Saturday morning.

?I liked the effort,? said Pelini. ?Conditioning-wise there is no comparison in terms of the physical preparation (between 2012 and 2013). I expect a big jump in the second practice. We are a much faster team than we were a year ago.?

The players moved from drill to drill without the constant reminder to pick up the pace.

The squad also moved through four rotations of 7-on-7 and was able to begin work on team drills with ease compared to year one under Pelini.

Following practice senior Mustafa Johnson addressed the media.

?Today was day one,? said Johnson.

When pressed how the offensive line looked he said ?Like day one and tomorrow we will look like day two. You have to have the mindset that each time you come out here you are going to improve. We will take it one day at a time.?

The Owls open up the season at Miami on August 30. Kickoff for the Friday night contest is set for 8 o'clock.

Cross of Jesus: A piece found in Turkey?

Cross of Jesus? Archaeologists say they may have found a piece of the wooden cross where Christ Jesus was crucified. The piece was found in a stone box in the ruins of a church in Turkey.

By Marc Lallanilla,?LiveScience.com / August 3, 2013

The cross relic isn't shown but archaeologists display the markings on a stone box, unearthed from the ruins of Balatlar Church, a seventh-century building in Sinop, Turkey.

Archaeologists working at the site of an ancient church in Turkey believe they may have found a relic of the cross of Jesus.

The relic was discovered inside a stone chest, unearthed from the ruins of Balatlar Church, a seventh-century building in Sinop, Turkey, situated on the shores of the Black Sea.

"We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross," lead archaeologist G?lg?n K?ro?lu told the Hurriyet Daily News. She displayed a piece of the stone chest with a small cross carved into it to reporters at the site. [Religious Mysteries: 8 Alleged Relics of Jesus]

"This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far," K?ro?lu said. The chest has been taken to a laboratory for further study, NBC News reports.

The cross upon which Jesus was crucified has been the object of much religious interest, as well as some controversy. Numerous churches around the world claim to possess a small relic of the wooden cross, but the authenticity of the relics is doubted by some critics.

Protestant theologian John Calvin, a famed 16th-century skeptic of religious relics like the so-called "true cross," once remarked that "if all the pieces that could be found were collected together, they would make a big ship-load."

Other purported Christian relics, including a 2,000-year-old ossuary embellished with obscure carvings that was first discovered in 1981, are also of disputed origins.

The ossuary, sometimes referred to as the "Jonah Ossuary" because one carving seems to show a fish swallowing a man (like Jonah, the biblical figure who was swallowed by a whale), was initially heralded as the earliest known Christian artifact. Later analyses by classical and biblical scholars, however, revealed that many of the supposed Christian symbols were just random marks or decorative carvings that were misinterpreted.

Another ossuary, said to hold the bones of Jesus' brother and put on display at a Toronto museum in 2002, is also controversial, with its authenticity hotly debated. And then there's the so-called Gospel of Jesus' Wife, claimed to be from the fourth century and to be the first ancient evidence of Jesus speaking of a wife. The business-card-size papyrus is highly contested, with many saying it is a forgery.

K?ro?lu's team has been working at the Balatlar Church site since 2009. Their archaeological dig has yielded some surprises, including more than 1,000 human skeletons. The church, constructed in A.D. 660, also has frescoes on its walls depicting Jesus, Mary and the Apostles.

Berlusconi finally falls. Could he take Italy's government with him?

The ex-premier's sentence for tax evasion - one of many in the past two decades - was upheld Thursday, putting Italy's ruling coalition at risk.

By Sara Miller Llana,?Staff writer / August 2, 2013

Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi in a television appearance broadcast last night comments on the Italian highest court sentence that affirmed his four-year sentence for tax fraud yesterday. The sentence for Mr. Berlusconi ? his first to be upheld through all appeals ? could upend Italy's government.

But when they woke up today, for the first time in history, Italians found he had been handed a sentence ? four years in prison ? that he cannot appeal.

It is symbolically dramatic for Mr. Berlusconi, who today called the decision unjust, but in reality it has more implications for the stability of Italy's coalition government.

Berlusconi's first definitive sentence ? his other trials, spanning sex with an underage prostitute to wiretapping, have been appealed or dropped after statues of limitation expired ? is a setback for the media tycoon, who until now had never been held accountable for crimes alleged against him. But it doesn?t mean he?s out of politics.

First of all, he will serve only one of the four years handed down because of efforts to reduce prison overcrowding, as Alberto Nardellli, the co-founder of electionista, a service that monitors politics globally, writes at CNN. Nor will the world see dramatic photos of Berlusconi behind bars: Because he is over 70, he?ll either serve his sentence at home or do community service.?

In addition to the sentencing, he faces a ban on public office, which the higher court ruled that a lower court must review. It?s unclear what will be decided, and whether he?ll have to step down from office now ? he is a serving senator ? or after the parliamentary term ends. But Berlusconi could still shape the politics of Italy, which he's done for 20 years, from the sidelines and step back in after the ban lapses.?

For Italy, the news is certainly a symbolic victory for those who have watched Berlusconi emerge unscathed from one scandal after another. Today, the BBC ran a statement from anti-establishment politician Beppe Grillo. He compared the sentence to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the BBC reports, saying Berlusconi "polluted, corrupted and paralyzed Italian politics for 21 years.??

But if some feel that justice has finally been served, the sentencing could put political stability at risk. The Italian Senate will have to take up the matter now, also voting on Berlusconi?s ineligibility to hold public office and when it would take place. ?And it promises to be an ugly fight, threatening the fragile left-right coalition formed by Enrico Letta. Markets sighed with relief when Mr. Letta stepped into the position of prime minister, after February elections led to a political standoff between the right and left.

Letta urged "a climate of serenity" for the good of the country, the BBC writes, while Italian President Giorgio Napolitano also called for calm. "The country needs to rediscover serenity and cohesion on vitally important institutional matters which have for too long seen it divided and unable to enact reforms," he said.

?We're in uncharted territory, and what happens next politically is nearly impossible to predict,? writes Mr. Nardellli. ?But the possible outcomes include the downfall of the government.?

(AP) ? The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday paved the way for the early release of nearly 10,000 California inmates by year's end despite warnings by Gov. Jerry Brown and other state officials that a public safety crisis looms if they're forced to open the prison gates.

The majority of justices refused Brown's emergency request to halt a lower court's directive for the early release of the prisoners to ease severe overcrowding at California's 33 adult prisons.

A panel of three federal judges previously ordered the state to cut its prison population by nearly 8 percent to roughly 110,000 inmates by Dec. 31 to avoid conditions amounting to cruel and unusual punishment.

The panel, responding to decades of lawsuits filed by inmates, repeatedly ordered early releases after finding inmates were needlessly dying and suffering because of inadequate medical and mental health care caused by overcrowding.

Court-appointed experts reported that the prison system had a suicide rate that worsened last year to 24 per 100,000 inmates, far exceeding the national average of 16 suicides per 100,000 inmates in state prisons.

Brown appealed the latest decision of the panel and asked the U.S. Supreme Court to cancel the early release order while considering his arguments that the state is making significant progress in improving conditions.

The governor also said he cannot further reduce the population without releasing dangerous felons.

"This ruling refusing to block the order doesn't bode well for their overall appeal," said inmate lawyer Don Specter, head of the Berkeley-based Prison Law Office.

Lawyers representing Brown argued in his July 22 appeal that releasing 10,000 more inmates will involve violent criminals and overwhelm the abilities of law enforcement and social services to monitor them.

"No data suggests that a sudden release of inmates with these characteristics can be done safely," the state said in its filing. "No state has ever done it."

The panel of judges and attorneys representing inmates have consistently rejected that argument. They say other states have marginally reduced inmate sentences without sparking an increase in crime.

The governor said the state has already transferred thousands of low-level and nonviolent offenders to county jails, which in turn have been forced into early release of many inmates to ease their own overcrowding issues/

The court rejected Brown's plea on Friday over the objections of Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. who all said they would have granted the state's request.

Scalia, in a dissent joined by Thomas, wrote that the previous order by the three-judge panel was a "terrible injunction" that threatens public safety. Scalia said the state's evidence shows it has made meaningful progress and that such reductions in the inmate population are no longer necessary.

In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the state must cut its inmate population to deal with unconstitutional prison conditions caused by overcrowding.

They have said that further delay in reducing prison overcrowding will further the substandard delivery of medical and mental health care and, by extension, lead to more inmate deaths and injuries.

In recent years, the special panel of judges has accused Brown of attempting to delay and circumvent their orders. They threatened to cite the governor for contempt if he does not comply.

The judges waived all state laws in June as they ordered Brown to expand good-time credits leading to early release. They also directed the governor to take other steps, including sending more inmates to firefighting camps, paroling elderly felons, leasing cells at county jails and slowing the return of thousands of inmates now housed in private prisons in other states.

If those steps fail, the judges ordered the state to release enough inmates from a list of lower-risk offenders until it reaches the maximum allowed population.

In its latest filing with the Supreme Court, the state argued that no governor has the unilateral authority to take the steps ordered by the three-judge panel. They would require approval in the Legislature or "judicial pre-emption of California's core police powers," the administration wrote.

Brown has argued that prison conditions have substantially improved and that circumstances have changed since the federal courts' original order four years ago to reduce the prison population.

The state is spending $2 billion on new or expanded facilities for inmate medical and mental health treatment. That includes seven new centers for mental health treatment and the opening last June of an $839 million prison hospital in Stockton that will treat 1,722 inmates requiring long-term care.

The state also has boosted hiring and salaries for all types of medical and mental health professionals.

The judges want the population reduced to 137 percent of the designed capacity in the state's 33 adult prisons by the end of the year The state has already reduced the population by 46,000 inmates since 2006.

More than half of the decrease that has occurred so far is due to a two-year-old state law ? known as realignment ? that is sentencing offenders convicted of crimes considered non-violent, non-serious and non-sexual to county jails instead of state prisons.

TCA: 'The League' no longer begging for NFL player cameos

By Tony Maglio

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "The League" doesn't need to chase down NFL stars for cameo appearances anymore.

The players - more specifically their agents - are now reaching out to the show, according to executive producer Jeff Schaffer. That said, they're being mindful not oversaturate the program with cameos - a la "Entourage."

And it's not just limited to football anymore. Baseball player Kevin Youkilis, currently of the New York Yankees, approached the cast and producers recently to talk about what a fan he is. The Los Angeles Kings even spent some time with the cast recently, EP Jackie Marcus Schaffer added.

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was the show's first major guest athlete in season 1 episode 4. Since then, Chad Johnson, Terry Bradshaw, Josh Cribbs, Terrell Suggs, Maurice Jones-Drew, Matt Forte, Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Jason Witten, DeSean Jackson, Deion Sanders and Adrian Peterson have appeared on the program ... to name just a few.

In the upcoming fifth season, Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt will be guest starring.

Stars Nick Kroll (Ruxin), Paul Scheer (Andre), Stephen Rannazzisi (Kevin) and Jon Lajoie (Taco) joined executive producers Jeff Schaffer, Jackie Marcus Schaffer on stage at FX Network's panel for "The League" at TCAs Friday.

The show's fifth season premieres Wednesday Sep. 4 at 10:30 on FXX. A sixth season has already been ordered.

Paul Krugman: ?Madness of the GOP is the central issue of our time?

holygoddamnshitballs:

image

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote a?blog post?summing up the current state of the Republican Party, noting that he doesn?t write about the ?looming chaos? in the government as much as is warranted because ?it?s hard to give this issue anything like the amount of coverage it deserves on substantive grounds without repeating oneself,? but arguing that ?neither you nor I should forget that the madness of the GOP is the central issue of our time.?

From the?column:

In the short run the point is that Republican leaders are about to reap the whirlwind, because they haven?t had the courage to tell the base that Obamacare is here to stay, that the sequester is in fact intolerable, and that in general they have at least for now lost the war over the shape of American society. As a result, we?re looking at many drama-filled months, with a high probability of government shutdowns and even debt defaults.

Over the longer run the point is that one of America?s two major political parties has basically gone off the deep end; policy content aside, a sane party doesn?t hold dozens of votes declaring its intention to repeal a law that everyone knows will stay on the books regardless. And since that party continues to hold substantial blocking power, we are looking at a country that?s increasingly ungovernable.

FILM REVIEW: THE HEAT (15) - ESP Magazine Peterborough

Director, Paul Feig?s surprise hit was nominated for two Oscars ? one of them being for Melissa McCarthy as Best Supporting Actress.

The Heat sees Feig and McCarthy team up once again. This time she plays a crude Boston Cop named Shannon Mullins who?s forced to team up with an uptight FBI Special Agent named Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock).

Together, the pair must try to put aside their differences to take down a ruthless drug lord.

The-Heat-1

On paper the plot sounds outdated and unoriginal. If you?ve seen one buddy cop movie, you?ve seen them all, right? Wrong. McCarthy and Bullock have terrific onscreen chemistry in The Heat. It?s a relationship we?ve not seen on screen for a while.

This is not Bullock?s typical role. For that reason I walked into the screening wondering whether she?d come across awkward and clearly out of her comfort zone. I was wrong ? it?s a role that was made for her.

This comedy was particularly refreshing to watch as my last trip to Peterborough?s Showcase Cinema was to see The Wolverine. Before that it was Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim and Star Trek. After two months of loud, explosive Blockbusters, a light-hearted comedy flick was needed.

Unfortunately, The Heat is not as funny as Bridesmaids or as well made. It also never quite rises above buddy cop movies such as 21 Jump Street or The Other Guys, but it?s a lot better and funnier than most films that fall into that genre.

Overall, watching 107 minutes of Melissa McCarthy?s larger-than-life personality can be a little tedious at times but credit where credit?s due, I enjoyed this movie and laughed much more than I thought I would.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office says it's unlikely that 36-year-old Raymond Wallace will be arraigned on Thursday because of his very serious medical condition.

Police say two deputy sheriffs from Middlesex County were accompanying Wallace to an appointment at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary on Wednesday when Wallace suddenly tried to snatch a gun from one of the officers.

In the struggle that followed, police said one deputy was shot in the leg and his partner fired at Wallace, hitting him in the chest.

Wallace was in jail awaiting trial on armed robbery, masked robbery and firearms charges.

US factories rebound with best growth in 2 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. factories revved up production, hired more workers and received a surge of new orders in July, helping them expand at the fastest pace in two years. The gains suggest manufacturing is rebounding and could provide a spark to economic growth.

The Institute for Supply Management said Thursday that its index of factory activity jumped to 55.4 in July, up from 50.9 in June. A reading above 50 indicates growth. The ISM is a trade group of purchasing managers.

A gauge of production soared 11.6 points to 65, the highest reading since May 2004. And a measure of hiring at factories rose to its best level in a year ? the latest of several encouraging signs ahead of Friday's July employment report.

"The report builds the case for a second-half speed up in U.S. industrial production," said Jonathan Basile, an economist at Credit Suisse.

Stronger growth at U.S. factories could aid a sluggish economy that has registered tepid growth over the past three quarters. And it could provide crucial support to a job market that has begun to accelerate but has added mostly lower-paying service jobs.

Businesses are placing more orders that are likely to be filled in the next few months. Steady gains in new-home sales and construction are supporting strong growth in industries such as wood products, furniture, and electrical equipment and appliances. And healthy auto sales are buoying growth in the production of metal parts and components.

Auto companies reported solid sales gains for July on Thursday. Ford, Chrysler and Nissan each saw sales grow 11 percent compared with the same month a year ago.

Bradley Holcomb, chair of the ISM's survey committee, said production will likely fall back a bit after its big jump in July. Some of the gain reflects a reduction in order backlogs, he said.

Still, the big jump in new orders suggests output growth will remain steady.

The Federal Reserve will likely take note of the manufacturing gains. It had slightly downgraded its assessment of the economy after its policy meeting this week. That led to speculation that the Fed might continue its bond purchases longer than anticipated.

But Fed officials are hopeful that growth will pick up in the second half of the year. And if factories continue to strengthen and add more high-paying jobs, the Fed might grow convinced that the economy is on the right track. If so, it could reduce the pace of its bond buying program later this year. The bond purchases have helped keep long-term interest rates low to encourage more borrowing and spending.

The health of the job market is crucial to the Fed's decision. Other reports this week have been encouraging.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to a 5 ?-year low, according to the Labor Department. Applications are a proxy for layoffs. When layoffs decline, it suggests companies are confident in their staffing levels and may add more workers.

And payroll provider ADP said Wednesday that companies added 200,000 jobs last month, the most for that survey since December.

Manufacturing had struggled in first few months of the year, held back by weaker global growth and steep government spending cuts. And slower production led factories to slash jobs from March through June.

But those trends have started to reverse. Europe's economies have shown signs of life in recent months. That likely contributed to a healthy gain in U.S. exports in the second quarter.

The economy grew at a lackluster 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That's better than the 1.1 percent rate in the first quarter, which was revised sharply lower. But it's still far too sluggish to quickly reduce unemployment, which is still high at 7.6 percent.

Daily iPhone App: Pivvot mixes music and mayhem

I really have a thing for simple games. And I'm not using the word "simple" as a replacement for "easy." I just mean that if a game can teach me how to play it without having to explicitly explain how, I'm much more likely to enjoy my first experience with it. Pivvot is that kind of a game.

Part puzzle game and part rhythm game, Pivvot teaches you everything you need to know about it within the first 45 seconds of playing. You control a floating orb that is tethered to a long track. Your only input comes in the form of swinging your orb in one direction or the other in order to avoid various obstacles.

These obstacles are sometimes attached to one side of the track, prompting you to swing in the opposite direction, or spread across both sides with one side being impassable and the other being a tight, but necessary squeeze. If your orb touches one of these objects, it disintegrates in a multicolored explosion and you'll have to try it again.

There are two main modes of play, a checkpoint-based run where your progress is saved, or a more intense ride where the speed of the course ramps up quickly and a single failure sends you back to the very start. Regardless of which you choose, it's no cakewalk, and the "Expert" variations of both of these modes make things considerably harder. There's also a truly sadistic "Berserk" mode that throws a ton of obstacles at you at high speeds.

This core gameplay is satisfying in its own right, but what really makes Pivvot worth playing is its soundtrack. The techno tracks match the minimalistic art style perfectly and many of the obstacles twist or sway along with the beat, adding an additional layer of complexity. Playing the game with headphones is an absolute treat.

Pivvot makes it a point to say that the game features no in-app purchases whatsoever, which I can appreciate. However, the game does cost US$2.99 upfront, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. Still, the game is undoubtedly worth its asking price and if you're looking for an arcade-style thrill that is instantly accessible, Pivvot is for you.

Time Warner Cable loses CBS channels, CBS says first time dropped from cable

Earlier this week negotiations between CBS and Time Warner Cable broke down and for a few minutes, channels started dropping from the cable service. An extension on the deadline brought channels back quickly, but time is up once again and subscribers are being greeted by the message above. The blackout applies to CBS in New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas, plus Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel nationwide. According to CBS, this is the first time it's ever been dropped from a cable system, and it has followed up with a note from Showtime claiming TWC removed the premium channel despite authorization to keep it while negotiations continue. Time Warner Cable has its own statement, claiming CBS has "refused to have a productive discussion" since the Tuesday morning extension in talks.

With the NFL season looming we'll see how long TWC is willing to push CBS.com (which some of you have reported is being blocked by CBS), Aereo and antennas as alternative solutions in these major markets and whether CBS is willing to live without the viewership. For now, subscribers missing The Doctors can check out a video from TWC explaining exactly what happens behind the scenes when channels go dark.

Update: TechCrunch has a statement from CBS confirming it's blocked Time Warner Cable customers from streaming full episodes. This is similar to Fox blocking Cablevision subscribers on Hulu during a carriage dispute in 2010, although that turned out to be short-lived.

Affymetrix shares climb after 2Q tops St. view

Shares of Affymetrix Inc. climbed Thursday, a day after the genetic testing instrument maker turned in a second-quarter performance that topped Wall Street expectations.

THE SPARK: The Santa Clara, Calif., company said Wednesday it lost $6.1 million, or 9 cents per share, in the quarter. Excluding one-time items, it posted profit of 4 cents per share, while revenue grew 20 percent to $79.5 million.

Analysts expected, on average, that Affymetrix would break even on $78.2 million in revenue, according to FactSet.

THE BIG PICTURE: Affymetrix makes technology that helps analyze biological systems at the cell, protein and gene levels. It provides kits for molecular biology applications like DNA sequencing and protein analysis.

THE ANALYSIS: Cowen and Co. analyst Doug Schenkel said in a research note he saw "promising signs of improved stability and execution discipline" in the company's performance.

"While the core Gene Expression business continues to decline significantly, (Affymetrix's) key growth drivers remain intact," Schenkel wrote. Still, he said that he needs to see more consistency from the company, whose shares he rates "Market Perform."

SHARE ACTION: Up 12 percent, or 45 cents, to $4.25 in late trading Thursday. The stock has traded between $2.96 and $5.26 over the past year.
