Welcome to the latest Happy Hour mailbag! You know how these work: You write us with your best rant/ joke/one-liner at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com or on Twitter at @jaybusbee, we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face.

The Matt Kenseth business happened too late to make this round of the mailbag, but I'm having a hard time remembering a driver who was leading in the points deciding to leave his team in the middle of the season. It could have happened last year with Carl Edwards, of course, but didn't. Everyone insists that this won't hurt the team in any way, but since this is without precedent, how can we know? What do you think will happen with Kenseth and the soon-to-be-disbanded Killer Bees of his crew?

Have your say in the comments below. Meantime, your letters. We emphasize that these are real letters from real readers. You too can participate ... if ya got the guts.

I hope Danica Patrick does well but I don't get all the expectations. How has she done compared to the start of so many drivers who seemed to do pretty well their first few seasons? I realize that many of them started taking off in year two or three, but is she really showing signs that she will be any better than those who are consistently in the bottom half of the standings? I hope she will, but can you give any evidence to that end?

? Captain Running Man

Let's have some fun with statistics, shall we? Let's focus on the first three seasons of certain drivers' Nationwide careers, since that's the point where most of the big names made The Jump. To start:

? Danica Patrick, age 30: 39 races, zero wins, one top 5, four top 10s, one pole.

Now, let's consider some well-known drivers at comparable points in their careers:

? Tony Stewart, age 27: 38 races, zero wins, six top 5s, seven top 10s, two poles.
? Jeff Gordon, age 19: 31 races, zero wins, five top 5s, 10 top 10s, one pole.
? Kyle Busch, age 19: 41 races, five wins, 18 top 5s, 25 top 10s, five poles.
? Carl Edwards, age 25: 36 races, five wins, 15 top 5s, 21 top 10s, four poles.

Of note: Stewart would leap to Sprint Cup after the above and win three races his first year there. Gordon would go on to win three races his third year in Nationwide. Busch would finish second in the Nationwide series in 2004, included in the above results. And Edwards would win nine races across both Sprint and Nationwide in 2005, the last year accounted for above.

So what have we learned? Patrick generally doesn't fare too well in most of these comparisons, but bear in mind these are the best of the best. And once these drivers got past the initial learning curve, success came often. Also, there's a point at which most of these drivers launched into the stratosphere, and Danica Patrick is on the cusp of that point, career-wise if not age-wise. Do you think she's suddenly going to bust out with four wins in Sprint Cup next year? Yeah, me neither.

But before we go writing her off as a never-will-be, consider this set of career-starting Nationwide stats:

? Driver X, age 24: 39 races, zero wins, zero top 5s, seven top 10s, zero poles.

Remarkably similar to Ms. Patrick's, wouldn't you say? And that driver would go on to win a couple races. You probably know him ... fella by the name of Jimmie Johnson.

Commentary :: Sonic Automotive Prices $200M Notes - Analyst Blog ...

Sonic Automotive Inc. (SAH) has announced the pricing of $200 million senior subordinated notes at 99.110% of the principal amount. The 7.00% senior subordinated notes are due in 2022 with a yield to maturity of 7.125%.

The company will be closing the private offering on July 2, 2012. The proceeds from the offering will be used in repurchasing the outstanding 5.0% Convertible Senior Notes, which are due in 2029. The repurchase would be in exchange of Class A common stock of the company along with cash. It would be used for the related payment of fees and expenses.

Sonic Automotive plans to buy back all the outstanding 5.0% Convertible Senior Notes with the proceeds. The remaining amount would be used for general corporate purposes, including repurchase of Class A common stocks.

Sonic Automotive, in the first quarter of 2012, witnessed a 24% surge in profit to $19.5 million from $15.7 million a year ago. Earnings per share swelled 22% to 33 cents from 27 cents in the first quarter of 2011. However, the results missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny.

Revenues went up 9.8% year over year to $1.6 billion. The hike was driven by a boost in revenues from new and used vehicles. The company recorded a 12.1% and 9% jump in revenues from new vehicle retail and used vehicle, respectively.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Sonic Automotive is a Fortune 500 company. It is one of the largest automotive retailers. The company operates with 100 dealerships spread across 15 states and in 26 major metropolitan markets. It represents about 30 different automotive brands with the majority of the dealerships being luxury and import brands. It competes with AutoNation Inc. (AN) and CarMax Inc. (KMX).

Baby Found Home Alone In Beltzhoover ? CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? Pittsburgh police are trying to determine whether an infant and a toddler were left home alone Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburgh?s Beltzhoover section.

Officials say it happened at a home in the 300-block of Michigan Street.

KDKA-TV?s Harold Hayes reports that police were called on reports that the infant, which was taken into the custody of CYS, was abandoned.

The mother of the infant and the mother of a toddler reportedly left the children in the care of babysitters.

But a young man, who came to the house and had fallen asleep, became alarmed when he awakened and found the babysitters had left.

It?s when he went to call police that a number of people became alarmed.

?An officer had been on the street on an unrelated incident. He was informed by a gentleman that there were children left at a residence unattended, and we?re still working on investigating where the parents of these two children are at,? said Sgt. William Bair, of Pittsburgh Police. ?We believe that the parents had left two younger children, they left them to babysit ? an 11- and 12-year-old ? and those two females that were supposed to babysit had left the residence.?

?Basically, what we have is two kids that were left in the house, a baby a few months old and another baby close to 2-years-old. They were left with a babysitter, at that time. I believe it was a 10-year-old, there?s a discrepancy as to whether it was a 10- or 14-year-old young lady,? said Richard Carrington, a Beltzhoover resident.

?Once she saw the young man had woken up, she basically left the house and left the kids with the young man. So, the understanding was that no one was left with the kids,? he added. ?The young man was here with the kids when he walked down off the porch to flag down the police; obviously, there was no one at the house at that time cause he was flagging down the police.?

The toddler is now back with relatives, but the infant remains in the custody of CYS officials.

Meantime, police are still trying to sort it out exactly what happened.

Graham Nash Works | Arts & Entertainment | Atlantic City Weekly

Neil Young by Graham Nash

Photo by Copyright Graham Nash 2012

Graham Nash has been playing with Crosby, Stills and Nash since 1968. Although he and his at-the-time new band mates ? Crosby, a former member of the Byrds; Stills of Buffalo Springfield, and Nash of the Hollies ? would become one of the biggest radio and concert sensations of the late 1960s and 1970s through today, the trio ? which would also work with Neil Young for many projects ? wasn?t quite ready for its first concert:?

The Atlantic City Pop Festival, held at the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, just before Woodstock in August 1969.?

?We didn?t play it,? says Nash, on a tour stop with CSN in Providence, Rhode Island. (The band is on the road through October and returns to the Borgata in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 30.)?

Although CSN was to debut live at the A.C. Pop Fest, with its name listed on the festival?s official posters and T-shirts, etc., Nash doesn?t quite remember the circumstances. ?

?I?m not sure to be honest,? he says. ?I?ve been asked this question twice within the last month. ? I believe that we needed more practice. Don?t forget Woodstock was only the second gig we ever played together live. ?

?I think we might have needed more rehearsal or something. Something was going on and we didn?t play that Atlantic City [date, but] there were people who swore they saw us there!??

Aside from singing and playing on such classic tunes as ?Almost Cut My Hair,? ?Teach Your Children,? ?Our House? and ?Chicago,? Nash has been interested in art and photography for decades. ?

Although he has had exhibits of his photography in the past, his paintings ? mainly acrylics ? are being unveiled for the first time beginning this Thursday (June 28) in Stone Harbor.?

While CSN plays the Borgata, Nash?s exhibit ?The Art of Graham Nash? will be on display at Ocean Galleries (9618 Third Ave., Stone Harbor) through Sept. 30. ?

However, on July 1, Nash will be at the gallery in person for a reception between 7-10pm where he will sign purchased art.?

?This exhibit has never been seen before,? says Nash. ?These paintings. I?ve been working on this [exhibit] for about a year and a half now.?

?This whole experience is fresh. It was amazing to me that when the gallery owners came out to my house in Los Angeles and saw my work it was their response that got me excited because, I mean, they?re supposed to know what they?re doing ? they?ve had an art gallery for a couple decades now and they?re this excited! It was shocking to me.? ?

So Nash decided to share his intriguing imagery with the world.?

?Why not let other people see them?? Nash says. ?You know? It?s brand new to me and it?s going to be exciting.??

Exciting for southern New Jersey folks as well, as the Ocean Galleries exhibit is the world premiere of Nash?s paintings of images and people such as Neil Young. ?

Nash says he is already working on another exhibit of different works.?

?I?ve done another exhibit of very serious work that I?ve been doing,? says Nash. ?

?Almost brutal images of things that disturb me. ... It?s hard to say what they are. They are a combination of painting and photographs and images that I made collages of ? interesting work. And there will only be seven pieces in the entire exhibit. Six of them will be four-feet-square and one image will be four-feet-high by 12-feet long.??

Aside from the images that will be on display at Ocean Galleries this summer, Nash?s Web site shows more than 40 photographs the 70-year-old multi-faceted artist has taken over the years.?

?I?ve been a photographer longer than I?ve been a musician,? says Nash. ?The first portrait that I ever took where I thought I had something was of my mother when I was 11.??

On the Web site, there is a photo of Bob Dylan playing live at Madison Garden for the George Harrison-organized Concert for Bangladesh. ?

?Oh, yes I was there. That?s Leon Russell there behind him. I was there to purely watch George pull off a piece of wonderfulness. It was a great, great concert.??

So, has Nash shown any of his subjects his paintings of them??

?No, neither David [Crosby] or Stephen [Stills] Neil [Young] or Joni [Mitchell] have seen any of these. It?s kind of wild; it would be interesting to hear their reaction.? The Neil Young image was painted from a photograph Nash took of the musician ?years ago.??

RELATED: INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN STILLS ('IT'S DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN')

?I really like it and I blew it up larger on canvas and painted it. There are several in there because not only are they all different colors and different interpretations, but I wrote a line from a Neil song into every painting.??

One of the Neil Young images is called ?Neil Young ? Hurricane,? which is a line from his song, ?Like a Hurricane.? There is also Neil Young ? Old Man, with, along his shoulder line, I?ve written a line from his song ?Old Man.? Just pushing it all forward.?

Like fellow musician Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who also has a southern New Jersey art exhibit (at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City through July, see images here), Nash prefers acrylic paint to oils. ?

?Right now, I?m loving acrylic,? says Nash. ?I don?t do [work] in oil. I?m too impatient. It takes too long to dry. It takes days to dry. It drives me crazy.??

90 still missing after boat capsizes off Indonesia

(AP) ? A boat carrying about 200 people capsized south of Indonesia and scores were feared drowned Thursday in an apparent attempt to reach Australia to seek asylum. Indonesian and Australian navies launched efforts to rescue survivors.

An Australian navy patrol boat and three cargo ships had rescued 110 survivors by late Thursday and were taking them 200 kilometers (120 miles) south to the Australian territory of Christmas Island, Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said.

She declined to comment on any bodies discovered. She said the patrol boat would return to the scene of the sinking to continue the search for survivors through the night.

The boat capsized about halfway between Christmas Island and Indonesia, Meehan said.

It was not immediately clear where the passengers were from.

Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean, is closer to Indonesia than the Australian mainland. It is a popular target for a growing number of asylum seekers, many from Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, who attempt to reach Australia on overcrowded fishing boats from Indonesia ? sometimes with deadly consequences.

"There's about 40 on the hull and the rest are in the water," Western Australia state Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said earlier. "Some of the very early reports suggest that up to 75 people may have drowned, but I do stress that they're unconfirmed at this stage."

O'Callaghan said bodies had been seen in the water. "We can't confirm that they've died, but it's likely," he said.

Western Australian police were being sent to Christmas Island to attempt to identify bodies, he said.

Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency, said two Indonesian warships had been dispatched to scene. He said Indonesia has sent notice to all cargo ships passing near the area to help, but he was not sure whether any had reached the disaster scene.

Prakoso said the boat was reportedly carrying 206 people, but added that he could not yet say their country of origin or from where they departed.

Australia sent a defense aircraft equipped with life rafts, an Australian Customs Service surveillance aircraft and two navy patrol boats.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who is seeking ways to stem the flow of asylum seekers to Australia, discussed the apparent tragedy with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Brazil where they are both attending a United Nations environment summit.

"At this stage, details are sketchy but what is apparent is there has been a large loss of life at sea," she said. "This is a very distressing and tragic incident."

In December 2010, an estimated 48 people died when an asylum seeker boat broke up against Christmas Island's rocky coast.

Last December, about 200 asylum seekers were feared drowned after their overcrowded ship sank off Indonesia's main island of Java.

Who's landing the big interviews after Oprah?

(AP) ? Since Oprah Winfrey packed up the couch that Tom Cruise jumped on and ended her daytime talk show last year, no one has truly filled her role as the top go-to person in television for major celebrity and news interviews.

Now someone is trying to claim that spot ? and would you believe it's Oprah again?

Faced with the potential failure of her money-pit cable network OWN, Winfrey is working the phones hard to secure big-name interviews for her show, "Oprah's Next Chapter." Back-to-back episodes last Sunday featured the Kardashian family and rapper 50 Cent, and the Kardashians will be back this weekend. Michael Jackson's daughter Paris and the late Whitney Houston's family made news with their interviews in recent weeks.

The open question is whether she can have the same cultural impact on a smaller stage. Winfrey's daytime talk show was generally seen by around 6 million people in her final years; "Oprah's Next Chapter" with the Kardashians was seen by 1.1 million viewers, according to the Nielsen company.

"I am sure that people have a conversation about that when they are exploring their options," said Sheri Salata, OWN president. "The one constant we have ... is that you have the opportunity to sit down with Oprah."

Winfrey's daytime show wasn't all about interviews, of course. But in her last few seasons, she sat down for conversations with the likes of Tina Fey, Elizabeth Edwards, Michelle Obama, Madonna, Denzel Washington, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Branson and Beyonce.

The audience was primarily women but, as Cruise proved with his eager declarations of love for Katie Holmes in 2005, the cultural impact could spread beyond the afternoon.

"Doing an interview on one of those shows was like Johnny Carson asking you to come sit with him after you've done your stand-up," said Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. "If there was any equivalent to playing the Palace at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, being on 'Oprah' might have been it."

While Thompson said that "half the people can't find OWN on their cable television," that may underestimate Winfrey. The "Oprah's Next Chapter" episode with Houston's family in March premiered to 3.5 million people, Nielsen said. Many others heard about it or saw clips.

Winfrey's presence in daytime was a mixed blessing for veteran Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman. Most of his clients wanted to be on "Oprah" and were convinced they had a story she wanted to hear. When they did, it was great.

When they didn't, not so great. "It was a ton of pressure," he said, "and there's a part of me that is happy the pressure has lifted."

Now he can suggest a media strategy with interviewers who can reach his clients' target audiences. Bragman often goes retro, preferring the news divisions at broadcast television networks.

Ellen DeGeneres is probably the leading personality in daytime now, but her show is about entertainment. Dr. Phil and Anderson Cooper get some interviews, as does "The View" and "The Talk."

None has the impact that Winfrey had on a consistent basis, said Bill Carroll, an expert in the syndication market for Katz Media.

Also missing from the scene is CNN's Larry King, who didn't have the same juice as Winfrey but had a friendly reputation that made him a popular stop for people with hard stories to tell. King's replacement, Piers Morgan, is not as established and is dragged down by CNN's ratings problems.

Katie Couric, whose daytime talk show starts in the fall, could be Winfrey's true heir as an interviewer in daytime. Her lengthy tenure at NBC's "Today" show makes her able to deftly switch from world leaders to actors to quirky celebrities enjoying 15 minutes of fame. "Not many people can do that," Bragman said.

First things first, however. Couric needs to build a show and prove that people want to watch her. Establishing booking superiority before Couric starts could benefit Winfrey.

While "Today" and CBS' "60 Minutes" are able to land strong interviews, no television organization has been as aggressive as ABC News in seeking the big "gets." The latest example is this week, with the network giving a prime-time platform to Chris Cuomo's interview with former presidential candidate John Edwards' mistress Rielle Hunter.

Diane Sawyer was rewarded last summer when her interview with Jaycee Dugard, who had been held captive by a sex offender for 18 years, had the best summertime ratings of a newsmagazine since 2004. Her November interview with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords about recovering from being shot in the head was seen by more than 12 million people.

There's more to ABC's efforts than filling a void left by Winfrey, said Eric Avram, who runs the network's interview bookings. Still, he doesn't miss her.

"Oprah obviously had an enormous presence and her iconic show was one of our biggest competitors," he said.

ABC usually gives its interviews wide exposure, on shows like "Good Morning America," ''World News" and "Nightline," and will often give interview subjects an hour in prime-time. ABC News' content sharing deal with Yahoo! also guarantees a wide web presence for the stories.

Having Couric in-house enabled ABC News to secure interviews with some British royal family members this spring, but delicate issues loom. Couric will remain with ABC News but her first allegiance will be to her talk show, which is syndicated and will be seen on some non-ABC stations. That leaves unclear whether ABC will be able to use interviews that Couric gets.

While ABC is doing well now, Bragman said not to underestimate NBC and the competition between the two. "They are both working very hard now," he said.

So is Winfrey, Salata said.

"If somebody has a rough story and wants to be more than a movie star or more than a pop singer, they know they're going to get that opportunity with Oprah," she said. "That is a huge advantage. That really does keep us in the game with all the big interviews."

Sentence Handed Down to Real Estate Ponzi Schemer

Joseph Mazella, Staten Island, New York, has been sentenced for running a $14 million real estate Ponzi scheme.

As previously reported on Mortgage Fraud Blog, Joseph Mazella was the founder and president of the Great Atlantic Group, Inc., a Staten-Island based real estate and financial consulting company. Evidence at the trial proved that Mazella told prospective investors that he would invest their money in real estate projects, including projects in Trenton, New Jersey, a warehouse in Utica, New York, and a golf course in Greene County, New York. Mazella told his victims that their money would be safe and that he would pay them a fixed rate of return.

In exchange for their investment, Mazella issued notes to investors that were supposedly backed by mortgages on the properties and encouraged several investors, typically senior citizens, to apply for reverse mortgages on their residences and to invest the proceeds with him. From approximately January 2007 until approximately December 2010, investors gave Mazella more than $14 million. By January 2007, though, Mazella was operating Great Atlantic as a Ponzi scheme in which he paid returns to investors from existing investors? deposits or money paid by new investors. Mazella also used investors? money to pay his personal expenses, including payments for a Porsche, mortgages on his personal residences and family expenses.

?When this defendant needed money to fund his personal lifestyle, he sought out victims from among the elderly. He promised this vulnerable class of victims security and stability. Instead he took many of their life savings and sources of future support to fund his own extravagant lifestyle. Those who engage in this criminal activity will face significant prison sentences,? said United States Attorney Loretta E. Lynch. Ms. Lynch extended her grateful appreciation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which led the government?s investigation.

Mazella was sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Carol B. Amon. A federal jury in Brooklyn returned guilty verdicts against Mazella on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud after a three-week trial in February.

The sentence was announced by Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

The government?s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys John Nowak, Winston Paes and Mary M. Dickman.

Uh oh! According to a status message on Apple's iCloud support page, some folks may be unable to access the service.

There aren't too many details available at this point. Apple's support page explains that only some users are affected by the issue and that "[n]ormal service will be restored ASAP."

BGR's Jonathan Geller writes that iCloud, iMessage, and even Apple's developer portal are affected but no one on msnbc.com's tech/sci team (nor any of the friends I hastily messaged) encountered any issues with any of the services.

We have reached out to Apple for comment.

FACT CHECK: Where Obama, Romney missed mark

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama accused Republicans of paying for wars "on the nation's credit card" even though he has used the same plastic for the same purpose, and for many others. Mitt Romney defied logic and statistics in claiming the huge stimulus package did not create private-sector jobs.

In dueling speeches from Ohio on Thursday, the presidential contenders at times offered skewed accounts of the nation's economic course and the record of recent years.

A look at some of their claims and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY: "That stimulus didn't work. That stimulus didn't put more private-sector people to work."

THE FACTS: There is no doubt that Obama's $800 billion-plus stimulus, enacted in February 2009, created both public-sector and private-sector jobs, even if not as many as its sponsors had hoped. The director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Elmendorf, recently estimated that the stimulus saved or created more than 3 million jobs. Princeton University economist Alan Blinder and Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, estimated that the stimulus, together with the bank bailout started by President George W. Bush and continued by Obama, saved or created more than 10 million jobs.

Part of the stimulus was directed toward retaining teachers and other public workers. But the package included plenty of construction and other "shovel-ready" projects with private workers, not public employees, wielding the shovels.

___

OBAMA: "Our businesses have gone back to basics and created over 4 million jobs in the last 27 months."

THE FACTS: True as far as it goes, but the claim inflates Obama's record of private-sector job creation by ignoring huge losses early in his presidency.

By going back 27 months, Obama starts counting at the low point of employment for the private sector in February 2010 and tracks how far it has come. But counting farther back, since the end of the recession in June 2009, private-sector job gains have been much more modest, 3.1 million. That's a more meaningful measurement to economists.

Overall, the economy has lost 1.37 million jobs ? 784,000 in the private sector ? since Obama was inaugurated.

___

ROMNEY: "China and the nations of the European Union over the last 3 1/2 years have made real inroads in Latin America and other places in the world with trade agreements and negotiated trade agreements, 44 different trade agreements being negotiated by China and European nations with other nations around the world. Guess how many trade agreements our president's negotiated? None. None."

THE FACTS: To be sure, Obama hasn't opened new trade negotiations, but he's finished several big ones, overcoming opposition from fellow Democrats to do so. Under his watch, the United States has made inroads in Latin America, too.

After taking office, he worked to revive a free-trade deal with Colombia that had been negotiated by his Republican predecessor but left to languish without congressional approval, and sought similar progress with South Korean and Panamanian free-trade pacts. The president held off on submitting the three deals to Congress as his administration tried to negotiate more palatable terms to Democrats. He finally submitted them in 2011 and Congress approved them in the fall.

___

OBAMA: "We were told that it was OK to put two wars on the nation's credit card; that tax cuts would create enough growth to pay for themselves. ... The failure to pay for the tax cuts and the wars took us from record surpluses under President Bill Clinton to record deficits. And it left us unprepared to deal with the retirement of an aging population that's placing a greater strain on programs like Medicare and Social Security."

THE FACTS: The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, begun by Bush, helped push the nation's fiscal picture into deficit. The Bush tax cuts lowered revenues, contributing to early deficits as well, and those revenues stayed below the rate of economic growth in subsequent years.

Meanwhile, the wars kept taking their toll on spending, ultimately driving the deficit to a historic high of $1.4 trillion in the 2009 budget year. That deficit also was driven by the recession, which was already well under way.

After Obama took office, he also paid for the wars by borrowing. What's more, the recession has increased deficit spending on programs that automatically ramp up during an economic downturn, such as food stamps and Medicaid. Borrowing also was required for the stimulus package.

As he winds down the wars, Obama is not exactly cutting up the credit card. In his State of the Union speech, he proposed using half of the money that would have gone to pay for the wars on a massive infrastructure plan.

(AP) ? A jockstrap pulled over his head in a high school locker room more than 50 years ago provoked a 73-year-old South Dakota man to fatally shoot his long-ago classmate, a prosecutor said Friday.

Carl Ericsson of Watertown, who last month pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder, was sentenced to life in prison Friday. Ericsson was charged in the Jan. 31 killing of retired Madison High School teacher and track coach Norman Johnson, who was shot twice in the face as he answered his front door.

Kenneth Meyer, the Lake County state's attorney, said Ericsson has indicated that the decades-old locker room incident led to the shooting. Johnson was a high school sports star and Ericsson was a student manager.

Beth Ribstein, Johnson's daughter, said her dad hadn't spoken to Ericsson for years and it was puzzling that he held onto the grudge for so long.

"It was just goofing off in a locker room," Ribstein, 50, said Friday after the sentencing.

Ericsson "hasn't been right for many years," Ribstein said, adding that he was envious of her father's success and standing in the community.

"He was just jealous of Dad his whole life," she said.

Ericsson had pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in February and requested a jury trial. But Meyer and defense attorney Scott Bratland announced May 1 that a deal had been reached. The first-degree murder charge could have carried the death penalty if prosecutors had chosen to pursue it.

At his arraignment hearing last month, Ericsson told Judge Vince Foley that he rang the doorbell at Johnson's house then asked his old classmate to verify his identity before shooting him with a .45-caliber pistol.

Both Ribstein and Johnson's older daughter, Terri Wiblemo, read statements during the sentencing hearing.

Wiblemo took the witness stand and immediately stared into Ericsson's eyes, opening with, "I'm speaking to you, Carl." She noted that Sunday is Father's Day, and her dad each year looked forward to enjoying his favorite meal of fried chicken, potato salad and rhubarb pie.

"We miss my dad very much," said Wiblemo, 52.

After high school, Johnson played football for Augustana College in Sioux Falls and earned a bachelor's degree in education from General Beadle State Teachers College. He later received a master's degree from South Dakota State University and returned to Madison High to teach and coach for more than 30 years.

Wiblemo told Ericsson that her dad impacted so many people's lives in a positive way.

"But I don't know that you would understand that kind of goodness," she said.

Ribstein told Ericsson that more than 600 people attended her Johnson's funeral ? including a member of Ericsson's family ? and that her father was well-liked and respected by all.

"I can't blame you for being jealous of Dad," she said.

Ribstein told Ericsson how much Johnson loved his daughters, his grandchildren and his pets, and noted that Ericsson, too, was a dog owner.

"The night you shot him, his dog didn't want to leave his side," she said.

Ericsson, in brief comments made after Johnson's daughters spoke, said he would like to tell Johnson's widow, Barb, that he was very sorry for what he had done.

"I just wish I could turn the calendar back," he said.

Ericsson didn't address the grudge on Friday. At his May arraignment, Ericsson told the judge: "I guess it was from something that happened over 50 years ago. It was apparently in my subconscious."

To support Ericsson's May plea, Bratland had submitted an affidavit from psychiatrist Robert Giebink that said Ericsson has a long history of anxiety problems and suffers from "severe and recurrent depression that is, for the most part, treatment resistant."

Giebink said Ericsson was significantly depressed and suicidal when they first met in January.

"Thinking was irrational. Judgment was impaired," Giebink wrote. "He made the comment that he wished each night that he would not wake up in the morning."

Lee Abbamonte: 5 Best Things To Do On A Road Trip In Iceland

There is so much to see and do in Iceland that it can get daunting to decide what's best. How to budget your time is always a seminal concern for tourists and travelers alike. Take my advice when you arrive in Reykjavik. Head to the Iceland Travel Market in the center of town. They are really professional and know their stuff. I booked three days of awesome trips in 10 minutes!

While I must say that most things that I have seen and done in Iceland are worthwhile, but there are a few that stand out above the rest. Here are the five best things to do on a road trip in Iceland.

1. Gullfoss Falls
Gullfoss is my favorite place in Iceland. It is located a few hours from the capital of Reykjavik and is one of the best waterfalls in the world. From the highway it doesn't even look like there is anything there until you notice the loads of cars and busses parked at the visitor center.

As you walk behind the visitors center and head down the wooden path toward the river you see the mist and then you see the top tier of the falls. At that moment you are happy with what you've come to see. But as you walk down the long flight of stairs to the ground level you notice that there is a second tier of the waterfall itself.

I won't go as far as to say it's as great a site as Victoria or Iguassu Falls but it's right there after Niagara Falls in my book of great waterfalls of the world. The power and volume of the water can be hypnotic and awesome. What a great site and you can get right next to it.

It will be a little misty as all big waterfalls are and it can be quite cold so dress the part and bring a waterproof coat too. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

2. Pingvellir National Park
Pingvellir National Park is of great significance to the Icelandic people and is their first National Park. It is also a site where the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian plates can be clearly seen in the faults that traverse the gorgeous region.

The drive through the park is spectacular and there are many different types of scenery to see. My favorite is the biggest natural lake in Iceland called Pingvallavatn. You drive along it for a while as you cruise through the park. It is marked with some nice islands in the middle and great vistas from all around.

Pingvellir is also home to Iceland's first Parliament. The entire park is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well worth the time to drive through and see it. It is one of the stops of the Golden Circle.

3. Langjokull Glacier
Langjokull is a glacier in the middle of Iceland. It is visible from quite a distance away. It seems to follow you around as you curve in and out of the mountain roads before you reach it.

The best thing about Langjokull is that you can drive your jeep onto the glacier itself and go as far as the temperamental weather will allow. Our day on the glacier was particularly windy and snowy so we only made it a mile or two out but had a blast while doing so. The views went from great vistas around the valley to a complete whiteout very quickly.

You can also race dog sleds on the glacier if you like. I would have done that exact thing if I hadn't done it on Greenland a few days earlier. The glacier is a must in Iceland and fits in nicely with driving to the Golden Circle sites and Pingvellir National Park.

4. The South Coast
The south coast may be my favorite part of Iceland. There isn't too much to see and do per se but there is an amazing amount of nature and views to be seen. The landscapes are ever spooky and it has an other worldly feel to it. You feel like you're driving on the moon.

The best actual site to see en route to or from the south coast is Kerid, an awesome volcanic crater lake. It has a colorful look and a very peaceful vibe to it. You'd barely even know it was there as you drive so get a map and pay attention.

The rest of the coast, whether you are coming from or headed toward Reykjavik, should be simply enjoyed. The views are great and the landscapes are mind blowing. There are also a lot of horses. You won't regret going a little out of the way on the brand new road they just put in.

5. The Blue Lagoon
The world famous Blue Lagoon has become the iconic symbol of Iceland to many tourists. In fact, many tourists simply transit Iceland en route to Europe or the States and take their layover time to visit the Blue Lagoon, which is right by Keflavik Airport. This is unfortunate that they don't see more of the country but it is cool that they can experience it.

The expensive ticket price (around $50) is a bit much, but the experience is a lot of fun. I have been three times now and have never been disappointed. Much has changed since my first visit in 2000 including a swim up bar where people can pay with their entry bracelets. This is convenient because you don't have to bring cash -- but annoying at the same time because then you have drunk people potentially peeing in the water!

The springs are gorgeous, nobody can dispute that, and it is a must see when you visit Iceland. However, do not make it your only thing that you see in the country. There is so much to see and do.

Anthropologists finds high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in breast milk of Amerindian women

ScienceDaily (June 9, 2012) ? Working with researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, anthropologists at UC Santa Barbara have found high levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids in the breast milk of economically impoverished Amerindian woman as compared to women in the United States.

Their research appears in the current issue of the journal Maternal and Child Nutrition.

The study compared breast milk fatty acid composition in U.S. and Tsimane women. The Tsimane live in Amazonian Bolivia, and eat a diet consisting primarily of locally grown staple crops, wild game, and freshwater fish. Samples of Tsimane mothers' milk contained significantly higher percentages of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is crucial for infant cognitive and visual development.

Additionally, the percentages of DHA in breast milk did not significantly decrease across the first two years postpartum, the period during which infant brains experience peak growth and maximal uptake of DHA. This was also true for the U.S. women, and the study suggests that extended breastfeeding by both U.S. and Tsimane mothers may provide infants with a constant source of DHA during the critical period of brain development.

"The fatty acid composition of breast milk varies with the fatty acid composition of a mother's diet and fat stores. Ancestral humans likely consumed omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in equal proportions," said Melanie Martin, a doctoral student in UCSB's Department of Anthropology, and the study's lead researcher. "Tsimane mothers' omega-6 to omega-3 ratios were four to one, much closer to the ancestral estimates than observed in U.S. women."

Unfortunately, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in industrialized diets varies from 10 to 1 to as high as 20 to 1. This is most likely due to the absence of fresh fish, and regular consumption of processed foods and vegetable oils rich in linoleic acid (an omega-6), as well as trans fats. These high levels of omega-6 have been linked to increased risks of obesity, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease, and interfere with the synthesis of DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids.

"The Tsimane mothers' average milk DHA percentage was 400 percent higher than that of the Cincinnati mothers, while their average percentages of linoleic and trans fatty acids were 84 percent and 260 percent lower, respectively," said Martin. "Despite living in economically impoverished conditions, Tsimane mothers produce breast milk that has more balanced and potentially beneficial fatty acid composition as compared to milk from U.S. mothers."

The study comes in the wake of the May 21 issue of Time magazine, which reignited debate over the appropriate age at which a child should top nursing. "Buzz about the recent Time magazine cover missed the point," noted Steven Gaulin, professor of anthropology at UCSB, and one of the study's co-authors. "The American diet is eroding one of the most important benefits breast milk can provide -- fats that are critical to infant brain development. It's not surprising that, among developed nations, American children are last on international tests of math and science."

The study's findings highlight important questions about infant formula, the fatty acid content of which is based on the breast milk of U.S. mothers. "The study suggests that standards of fatty acid composition for infant formulas should be derived from populations such as the Tsimane," Martin explained. "And nutritional recommendations for infants should account for the prolonged requirements of fatty acids that breast milk naturally provides."

Also contributing to the study was Michael Gurven, professor of anthropology at UCSB.

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you. There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.

Facebook's mobile App Center launches with 600 apps

NEWS

Facebook's mobile App Center, the company's first big announcement since its IPO, went live on Thursday with more than 600 apps, including Nike+ GPS, Ubisoft Ghost Recon Commander, Stitcher Radio, Draw Something and Pinterest.

The Facebook App Center will link to other app stores as well as selling apps directly. Image credit: Facebook

"The App Center represents a new way for users to discover social applications," said Douglas Purdy, Facebook's director of developer products, who showed off the App Center at a launch party in San Francisco. Plus, he says, it gives developers a way to reach Facebook's more than 900 million users. Facebook was responsible for 83 million visits to the Apple App Store in May, Facebook said.

The App Center is designed to offer an experience personalised for each user, with app recommendations based on the apps they and their friends use. So if you're a person who likes word games ? something Facebook would know from your Facebook behaviour ? the App Center will surface those sorts of apps for you. Then, when you select an app you like, you'll be sent to the Apple's App Store or Google's, depending on your device.

Why Britain has a moral duty to bring Israel in line.

Zionism was not created in Britian. It was created in mainland Europe, by a group of atheist Jews. That said, while Britain may not have founded Zionism, it certainly has to take some responsibility for accomodating and faciltating it, by way of the Balfour agreement.

Contrary to popular belief, Lord Balfour did not agree to do this, because he was empathetic about Jews. On the contrary, Lord Balfour hated Jews, or more accurately, he did not like what he saw as typical behaviour in large gatherings of Jews in Britain.

Don't believe me about Lord Balfour and Jews, go look yourself. I am going to offer you no link, people will only say it is not a 'good' source, so find a link that suits you, about it.

Truth be told, he was relieved, he thought that Jews in Britain would leave. For this new 'homeland'. They didn't. Maybe some did.

For the British, they also believed it would be handy to have an outpost there, in the Middle East, populated by immigrant Jews they believed would be loyal to them, in some sense.

Big mistake, the Zionist does not know the meaning of loyalty, and in his world of anti virtues, loyalty is merely something to be exploited.

There is evidence of that all around.

Britain's pay back for making it possible for this 'Jewish state' to locate to where it did, was to be targets of Jew terror groups, like Irgun and the Stern Gang, who bombed buldings, and killed civilians. They were the blueprint for all modern terrorism.

In all truth, what they did to the King David Hotel should have been seen as an act of war in itself, and the experiment aborted right there and then.

But no, for whatever reason, we did not squash the seeds of terrorism when we could, and now look what we have?

On one side of a wall, we have a state that have killed more civilians that Hamas. One that has routinely ignored the Geneva Convention, the UN and International Law. And on the other side? Naturally, you have the inevitable violent opposition.

Israeli operatives have done a good job convincing Americans that American interests are Israeli interests.

Believe me, do some reading, and you will see yourself that they are NOT.

However, I consider Israel to be such a rogue state, so far removed from anything approaching trustworthy enough to hold nukes, and so much of a problem to peace, that they must be made to abide by international laws, remove the blockades, remove all the illegal settlements, end the aburd permit system and check points, and give full co-operation to have what nukes it has inspected.

When the German Reich grew so heady on power, that IT disregarded human rights, and international treaties, many nations did roll over, and accept their new masters.

No resistance in Belgium to speak of, or Holland, and the so called 'French Resistance' comprised mainly of some people buying the newspaper of the 'resistance', but really that was about it, many French had accepted their new masters, and were okay about it.

Leaving the German/Russia thing aside for now, it was always Britain that Hitler knew would be the tough nut to crack.

Why do you think Hitler wanted peace with Britian? He had only respect for our heritage, our spirit, and, to be honest, the fact that we are an island nation with a good military.

While other nations in Europe meekly lay down, Britain did not, and toward the end, they were joined by America, which was enough to tilt any last hopes of a Reich victory.

Since this was partly Britians doing, how things have played out in Israel, I believe that Britian has a special responsibility to demand that Israel comply with all international law, Geneva convetion, etc.

Take the lead, and lobby the other nations in the EU to support the morally correct stance.

If Israel is the civlised state that it tells us, then they will negotitate and follow the demand for international law compliance, and nuke weapon inspection.

If they did that, good stuff, one huge stride made.

One that would actually improve Israel's image, and the peace in the region.

Failure to comply would lead on a Gov led boycott of all Israel goods, investements, etc, in the European nations of the willing.

If sanctions are good enough for other countries, then they are good enough for Israel.

Germany woud get up off it's knees, stop it's taught self hating, and cease to plough any more cash into Israel.

Discussion, demand to obey law, demand to undo that which is illegal, threat of sanctions, all of those things are perfectly legit, to pressure a rogue state into better observance.

There would be no question of it getting to a military option.

Look, forget the myth about the IDF, and how powerful the Israeli army are.

They really aren't. Why do you think they need Americans and Brits to do the real fighting?

I grant you, they are good at shooting dead unarmed civilians, and they are pretty hot at dropping chemical onto kids to burn them, but when it comes to troops on the ground fighting, no, they avoid this at all costs, because they cannot fight real armies.

Or even crap one's, as Hezbollah were to demonstrate, just a few years ago. Israel put troops on the ground. They got pumped.

So, please, let us not hear that Israel could stand up to Britian let alone a Britain supported, in a military sense!

Even if cuts have scaled our investment back, it would still be MORE than enough, WAY more, to flick Israel and the IDF into space.

And for all that some fake Americans may come on here and claim that the US would 'help Israel'....are you sure?

Israel costs the US money, and many Americans are smart enough to realise that Britain and Europe make better allies and trading partners, now and in the future.

Do you REALLY think that the US would save you this time?

It is boldness and honest that we need back in our politics.

And there would be no more bold an action or more honest a gesture, than to demand Israel behave within the boundaries of law.
