Military travelers get a dose of "Minnesota nice"

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -- Troops returning home from war are getting a special welcome at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

"We're serving them because they serve us," said volunteer Rick Adler of Prior Lake.

Adler is a volunteer troop greeter with the Armed Forces Service Center (AFSC). The greeters welcome military personnel at their gate with beverages, snacks and calling cards.

"It is a way of saying thank you for your service," said Debra Cain, Executive Director of the AFSC.

In addition to the greetings at the gates, the AFSC runs a full center on the mezzanine level above the main ticket area in Terminal 1. It is open to active-duty military personnel, their dependents, activated reservists and National Guardsmen.

The AFSC offers military travelers a quiet place to rest, enjoy a meal and wait for flights. All services are offered free of charge.

Local companies provide the supplies and area volunteers add the hospitality.

Volunteers are always needed. Visit the AFSC website for details on getting involved.
